Why you’ve just gotta see Bryce Canyon National Park in your lifetime!

If you’re planning a trip to Southern Utah, there are quite a few sights that are probably on your list. It’s the perfect family playground with its warm weather and astounding geographical wonders, including the Mighty Five National Parks: Zion, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Arches.

Bryce Canyon National Park is like nothing you will ever see in your lifetime. It’s a literal freak of nature and something to put on your bucket list.

 We took our four kids, ages 4-10 years old, and spent five days in Southern Utah. Crunched for time, we were able to spend a day in Zion National Park and another in Bryce Canyon National Park, among several hikes and sites in St. George, Utah. Here’a a quick guide to Bryce National Park.

How To See Bryce Canyon National Park in One Day

Be Prepared

1. Parking: First be aware of the parking situation. Similar to Zion National Park, there is a free shuttle that will take you from site to site within Bryce Canyon. Unlike Zion National Park however, the shuttle is not mandatory, but it is extremely convenient. If visiting the park during peak season (June-August) you may have more success and less headache taking the shuttle.

2. Temperature: Bryce National Park is an oddity in many ways, one being the weather. While you can count on nearby Zion National Park to be warm, the higher elevation of Bryce Canyon means that the weather is colder and more unpredictable. 

We went the first week of October and needed coats and long pants pretty much the entire time where the day before in Zion we all had shorts and t-shirts.

3. Bring a lunch: There are plenty of places to enjoy a snack or a picnic. There is a lodge, a visitor’s center, a general store, and a pizzeria inside the park, but you may want to do your own things as well.

Understand the Geology

Bryce Canyon’s geology is one of a kind. There is literally no where else on the face of this Earth where you’ll find this type of land erosion and formation.

Giant rocks and aspiring boulders jut from the red rock canyon in formations that appear like a giant’s game of chess. These hoodoos, or pillars of rock in fantastical shapes, are caused by a unique kind of erosion that only happens in Bryce Canyon.

So how are these bizarre pillars formed? Not wind, but water erosion.

Thousands of years of water, ice, and gravity combined forces to create one of the most beautiful views known to man. 

Bryce Canyon Hikes

Even if you’re not an avid hiker, exploring Bryce Canyon is an awesome experience. There are over a dozen hikes, all ranging in difficulty from easy to moderate, and to get the most out of your experience, make sure to do at least a couple.

If visiting with kids, make sure to stop in at the visitor’s center and ask the ranger for the safest hikes for your family. (Some involve steep drop-offs or climbs and are not suited for children.)

The Scenic Rim Trail is one of the most astounding trails you will ever hike in your lifetime. This trail takes you right along the perimeter of Bryce Canyon where you feel like an original explorer, seeing these fantastical hoodoos up-close and personal. It’s a feeling you’ll never forget.

Kids Can Earn a Free Ranger Pin

One of my kids’ favorite parts of visiting Bryce National Park is the Junior Ranger Program. Before you enter Bryce Canyon, first go to the Visitor’s Center and ask the ranger for a Junior Parks handbook. This is so fun for kids! 

It’s a workbook full of activities that kids can do and things they can look for throughout Bryce Canyon. It keeps them engaged and excited the whole time and at the end, if they’ve completed the workbook, they can turn it back into the park ranger and receive a free Junior Ranger pin.

You can see Bryce Canyon National Park in a day if you’re crunched for time, or spend a few days there if you have more leeway. Visit the National Parks Service website for places to camp or stay near Bryce Canyon and make it a point to visit in your lifetime.

How To Replace Taco 0014-F1 Circulator Pump Cartridge

Replacing Taco 0014-F1 Cartridge

I like to try and fix things myself when they are easy and straight forward. Typically I’ll do some research and determine if a home repair is something I can tackle myself or if it’s time to call a PRO. Being a contractor myself I find myself hating to pay top dollar if the task at hand is just some basic labor involved. Recently I was noticing an issue with the main circulator pump on our hot water heating system and did some research on the possible repair solutions.

Our boiler is a propane fired Weil Mclain Ultra boiler which produces both our domestic hot water and hot water for radiant heat and baseboard heat. The system includes a main circulator pump (Taco 0014-F1 1/8 HP Cartridge Circulator Pump) and smaller circulator pumps for each of the zones. Recently I started noticing that the system was quite loud when running and further investigation I determined the main circulator pump was very loud. These pumps are typically very quiet where it’s hard to know if they are even running.

With the system being approximately 13 years old and doing online research I found that most of these pumps wear out in the impeller / bearing assembly. Further research shows that on this model that assembly is contained within a replaceable cartridge. With a little more research I discovered that the cartridge is extremely easy to replace and only take a few minutes and a couple basic tools.

Step 1 – Cut Power

Obviously the first step in any repair to an electronic component is cutting all the power to the device. Most boilers/furnaces have a kill switch located near them that cuts all power to the system. I shut that off as it cuts all power to both the boiler and all the circulator pumps. If you’re not sure you can also cut power at your main circuit breaker panel.

Step 2 – Isolate the Pump

The first step in this process is isolating the pump so all the water in your heating system isn’t drained out. Now this is going to be really easy if the original installer did a good job on your install (here’s the difference between a cheap job and a job done right). Most good installations include a shut-off valve on both sides of the pump so that the pump can be serviced or replaced without draining the entire system.

In the picture above you can see the top valve closed (when the valve is open the handle should run along the length of the pipe, and when closed it should be perpendicular to the pipe, the handle turns 90 degrees). You can’t see the bottom valve but it’s closed as well (handle removed and used on the upper valve, no idea where the handle went!).

By closing both valves the only water that will escape during the repair will be the small amount located within the pumps and piping between the two valves.

Step 3 – Remove the Motor Housing

Most Taco cartridge circulator pumps are similar so these instructions likely apply to many different models. The next step is really easy, using a socket (in this case, you may need an Allen wrench on some models) 4 bolts need to be removed that hold the motor housing to the main body of the pump assembly. As you can see in the picture above, the 4 bolts are located around the outer edges of the motor housing.

Slowly pull the motor housing off the pump housing. The water that’s inside the pump will leak out so take care not to get water into the motor housing itself. One of two things is going to happen here, either that impeller cartridge is going to stay with the motor or in my case the cartridge stayed attached to the pump housing. In either case you’ll need to likely pull at it to release it from either side. You should be left with 3 pieces, the motor housing, the cartridge and a flat metal plate that holds the cartridge in place.

Step 4 – Replace Gasket

When you order a Taco replacement cartridge (for this pump I ordered part number TAC0014-004RP) it comes with the cartridge, 4 new bolts, and a replacement gasket. As you can see above there’s a large rubber gasket that fits into a machined slot in the pump housing (shiny round surface in the background). Simply pull out the old gasket and install the new one, it will likely fit loosely but should stay in place long enough to re-assemble the pump.

Step 5 – Insert the New Impeller Cartridge

Above you can see both the new and old impeller cartridges. There are completely self contained units that simply slide into the motor housing. The rubber gasket seals the impellers into the pump housing and keeps the water from entering the motor housing, it’s a really simple and elegant design in my mind! The flat plate should sit on top of the motor housing, then slide the new cartridge into the motor housing.

Step 6 – Bolt Motor Housing to Pump Housing

The next step is bolting the motor housing / cartridge assembly to the pump housing with 4 bolts. The kit comes with 4 new bolts so I’d recommend using the new bolts. The important step here is to finger tighten all 4 bolts, then tighten the bolts a little each around in a circle until they are all tight. This prevents the gasket from getting pinched on one side and not sealing properly. Think of it like tightening lug nuts on a car.

Final Step – Testing

The final step is turning the system on and testing to be sure there are no leaks. First you’ll need to open both valves back up and let water enter the pump. Next turn the power back on to the system (boiler and pumps). Then turn up your thermostat so the system is calling for hot water and turns on the main circulator pump. I let it run for about 30 minutes to be sure there were no leaks. The best part was HOW QUIET it was! There’s something really satisfying about fixing simple things yourself. The new cartridge cost $155 compared to over $300 for a new pump and a $90/hr charge from my plumber. Figure I probably saved $250 or more fixing this myself. While I don’t think all boiler repairs should be done as a DIY project I do think with a little research there are repairs you can make yourself and save some big money.

Welcoming Holiday Guests with a Rustic Tablescape from Walmart

The holidays mean guests and guests mean FOOD. I mean, there’s really NO good party without food! I’m a firm believer that eating is a great way to bring people together – no matter what their differences. I mean, put out a good spread and you might even forget about the conflict you had with your mother in law last week. HA! 

Often, the physical center of that food and togetherness is the kitchen table. Many a night have we gathered here together, and I’m sure it’s the same in your house. We joined forces with Walmart to create this gorgeous, and festive tablescape. I’m so excited to share the details, because I really do think it’s simply gorgeous. 

Let’s chat Walmart first. I’ve been so incredibly impressed with their home department lately. They have so many fantastic lines and pieces right now! No matter what your style may be – from farmhouse, to coastal, to rustic – they really have something for everyone and every budget. Plus, Walmart offers FREE 2 day shipping on purchases $35+, and that’s NEVER a bad idea! I love not having to leave my house! Another thing I’ve learned is that Walmart also offers a lot of brands via 3rd party. You can find a FANTASTIC selection!

I wanted the feel of this table to be natural, even rustic. You wouldn’t find a lot of sparkle and hot pink around this table!
I started with this buffalo plaid runner.
I love the complimenting black and white with the pops of red, green and gold. 
It all says CHRISTMAS, without being over the top.
I also love that I can use this runner YEAR round and not solely for Christmas.

Down the center of the runner I alternated between the natural/rustic look of THESE potted greens, and the more modern look of THESE candlesticks.
Both are unexpected companions, but I feel like they really compliment each other. 
The natural vibe of the cedar tree in a metal tin is perfection. I also incorporated some loose greenery – in the form of red berries and some cedar garland down the runner and at each place setting. I felt like this pulled everything together just perfectly!

The candlesticks add that pop of metal and touch of modern on an otherwise more rustic table.
You never want something overpowering in the middle of your table, so I liked that these made a statement, but still allowed guests to see one another and converse.

Not to mention, this pop of gold went perfectly with the gold rimmed glasses (that I’m equally obsessed with.).

 

I wanted the color to come from the centerpieces and greenery, so I choose a pretty understated and neutral dishware. No places with Christmas trees and santa around here!
First up, this gorgeous dishware. To be honest, I’d never seen GREY dishware like this before! Have you?
To me, it almost looks like stone. 

I paired it with this dark, polished, black flatware. How cool is the BLACK? So unexpected! I considered grabbing gold flatware, but I wanted a more rustic look, and I think I got it. Plus, this flatware is so affordable and great quality. Totally one I’d tell my best friend to purchase!

I think the final product turned out FANTASTIC. I’m totally in love with the festive, rustic holiday vibe. Can you believe I found everything at Walmart!?! I love their wide selection of everything you need for a holiday dinner – from the dinnerware to the decor, Walmart has you covered!
