When School’s Not Cool: 10 Tips for Reluctant Kiddos

Some kids love school, others just don’t. The hardest thing for parents and teachers alike is seeing a child who is terrified about school. The day I dropped my first-grader off and tears were streaming down her face, my heart nearly broke. To make the transition to school easier, try these awesome tips for reluctant kiddos that are both sweet and creative.

When School’s Not Cool: 10 Tips for Reluctant Kiddos

1. Jitter Glitter

My son’s third grade teacher handed little packets of Jitter Glitter to every child on “Meet the Teacher” day (the day before school). She told the kids that it’s okay to be nervous and to read the poem and put the special jitter glitter under their pillows tonight. It worked like a charm!

2. Soft Start

For the first week of school, some teachers have what they call a “Soft Start” where parents of reluctant kiddos are allowed to come into the classroom for 15 minutes before school starts to help their child get situated and say goodbye.

3. Read “The Kissing Hand” Book

This book comes highly recommended by our readers and the Amazon reviews concur. The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn is about a little Raccoon who is doesn’t want to start school. His mama shares with him a family secret called the Kissing Hand to help relieve his fears. It’s the perfect book to read to reluctant kiddos who don’t think school is too cool.

4. Explore the School Beforehand

One thing that helps my anxiety-prone kiddos is to know what they’re walking into beforehand. The more reluctant kids can be prepared, the better. Schedule a time before school starts to come in and explore the school. Maybe the principal or your child’s teacher can give a tour, or perhaps you can just walk around together. Show your child where the bathrooms are, the lunchroom, and check out the playground together.

5. Pom Pom in the Pocket

A mom shared this sweet idea with us on our Instagram page. If you’ve got a child who is reluctant or scared to leave mom or dad, give them a special pom pom to put in their pocket. Tell them that this is a very special pom pom that you’ve put love into (make a show of kissing the pom pom or even spraying it with your perfume or cologne). Your child can keep the pom pom safe in his or her pocket and pull it out or reach in and touch it if they feel sad or lonely while you’re apart.

It’s a great sensory reminder that you’re never too far away.

6. Bring a comfort item from home.

Similarly, this has worked well for my reluctant kiddos when they were scared about starting a new grade or trying something new. I let them choose one special friend or comfort item from home (usually a stuffed animal or small blanket) to take in their backpack. They don’t take it out of their backpack, but can go take a peek inside if they need. Just knowing that they have something from home in their backpack is all the comfort they need.

7. Box of Rubbing Rocks

A Kindergarten teacher did this for her class with great success. She would keep a box of smooth rocks in her classroom and call them “comfort rocks.” Whenever anyone was feeling sad, they could go to the box and hold one of the rocks for as long as they needed to.

8. Acknowledge Feelings

One of the most important things I’ve learned with my shy kids is to acknowledge their feelings. So often we are quick to brush them off saying, “Oh, it’s not scary…” or “Don’t worry about it, you’ll be fine.”

What anxious/reluctant kids need to hear is that their feelings are validated. “Yes, I can see how that would be scary…” or “It’s okay to feel scared. When I was going into first grade…” They want you to relate to them, to empathize with them.

For this reason, I share with my kids what I call the “Five Times Rule.” Basically, the first time you try something new (like a new class) you will feel a lot of nervousness. The second day still may be a little scared, but not as much as the first day. And by the fifth time, you won’t feel scared at all!

9. Don’t tell them you’ll be lonely without them.

A big mistake that parents unknowingly make is to say things like, I’m going to miss you so much…or  I’m going to be so lonely without you. Although perhaps true, it doesn’t help kids put on a brave face. Instead, tell them that you are proud of them and so excited for the fun things that they’ll be doing in school. Of course you’ll want to hear all about it when they get home.

10. Plan a playdate.

Finally, to help kids ease into a new school or class, organize a playdate within the first few weeks with one or two kids in the class. When my son entered first grade, I was so worried about him making friends, considering how shy he was. At Back-to-School night, I asked his teacher if there was anyone in the class he seemed to connect with. The teacher pointed me in the right direction, introduced me to another parent and we set up a playdate. To this day (he’s in third grade now), that boy is still his very best friend. Sometimes it just takes a little gentle nudge.

So whether you’re a parent or a teacher, all kids deserve to have a positive school experience and sometimes that means getting a little creative. But once reluctant kiddos feel comfortable in their classrooms, they will excel social and academically.

Three Things You Should Know about Shopping Facebook Marketplace

*Thanks to Facebook Marketplace and ShopStyle for sponsoring this post. We’ve found the coolest new place to shop and you should know about it!

There are a few phases in a mom’s life when you dive into uncharted waters. For me, it all started with my first baby and all the firsts that come with raising a child. There was her first day of Kindergarten, where I stood by the door holding back tears while she happily walked into her classroom without me. Next was the first time she came home in tears because of hurt feelings on the playground. Over the years I have been surprised by one coming-of-age milestone after another and now a new unknown—middle school.

So for some friendly advice (and fashion inspiration), I’ve relied on my niece who is going into 7th grade this year. She’s got the inside scoop on what’s cool for middle school.

Those of us with memories of middle school know there are plenty of firsts on the horizon and the best way to tackle a new adventure is with confidence. And nothing helps build a kid’s confidence for a new school year quite like new gear.

We can all relate. I still remember the wide-leg jeans I debuted on my first day of middle school. Dang, I felt like such a fashionista in them! And if you’re looking for a cool new place to shop, with unique items at killer deals, I’ve got to tell you about Facebook Marketplace. My niece is rocking some Marketplace items here and she gave everything two big thumbs up. And with this 12-year-old’s endorsement, you know Facebook Marketplace is pretty cool.

Three Things You Should Know about Shopping Facebook Marketplace

1. It’s a great place to find unique items.

Kids today are all about swagger. As my kids’ hip-hop dance teacher taught them…swagger is the way you express YOU. It’s confidence, it’s unique to you, and it’s an outward expression of your personality.

Nothing says swagger like finding those cool pieces that showcase parts of who you are. And Facebook Marketplace is the hotspot for unique items. If you like fun and quirky, they are a vendor you don’t want to miss! I fell in LOVE with this cool pencil case. (And check out this awesome banana one!)

Also cool for school are these cross-body bags

They’re very gender-neutral and can tote essentials like water bottles, electronics, school supplies, and hygiene products (nice and discretely, I might add).

2. You can score some amazing deals!

Back to school shopping doesn’t need to be stressful or expensive when you shop Facebook Marketplace from the comfort of your home or phone.

It’s super easy to shop—just go here (make sure you’re logged into Facebook) and you can start browsing thousands of cool new items from multiple vendors and tons of great brands.

Marketplace is an awesome spot to shop for electronics, like laptops, iPads, tablets, smartphones, and all things music. Note that some items are certified refurbished and some are new. You can read item and vendor reviews to help you make a decision.

I got these Beats by Dr. Dre URBeats 3 headphones from Marketplace and they are certified manufacturer refurbished. They were nearly half the price as new ones and they work great!

This Ultimate Ears Wonderboom is too cool for school!

If you don’t have a portable speaker, you absolutely need one. They are so fun and come in super handy. My kids take ours out on the trampoline and do dance parties (yes, my neighbors are sick of hearing “Old Town Road”). We take our portable speaker on camping trips and family reunions to blast music and party.

3. Payments and shipping are fast, easy, and reliable.

I’ll admit I was a little reluctant to purchase something from Facebook Marketplace for the first time. I wasn’t sure what the buying and shipping experience would be like.

Let me tell you straight up: It was very easy to purchase items. When you’re ready to buy, you simply click “Checkout” and enter your info like usual. The one thing different from other buying experiences is that there won’t be a “Cart” that holds all of your items. You purchase each Marketplace item separately, and it’s super easy because your info is saved and auto-filled. So it’s fast and convenient.

And what’s cool is that you get Facebook alerts when your items are confirmed, billed, and shipped which is super helpful. No matter where I am, I can see on my phone the status of my items via Facebook.

Shipping: Each item shipped within 24-48 hours of when I purchased it. I entered my niece’s address so she could get some fun new surprises for school and they all arrived in great shape within a week on her doorstep. (Which I was slightly nervous about because they live out in the country in Idaho. But everything arrived like clockwork!)

You can even get gift cards like this one from Under Armour that are emailed to you within a day.

So hop over to Facebook Marketplace and check it out! Browse around for unique items and great deals that will have your kiddos prepped and ready to show the new school year their swagger!

The Happy Surprise Every Dog Deserves

*A huge thanks to BarkBox for sponsoring this post and for making a happy surprise possible for over 2,000,000 doggies!

If you’ve got a doggie friend, you know how important they can be to your family. Dogs are not only loyal companions, but some of the very best friends you and your children will ever have.

Growing up, my family had a lovable yellow lab named Halley. As a puppy, she helped my four siblings and I work out our energy as we’d run all over the yard, throwing a tennis ball to her, and even wrestling with her. As we grew up and became teenagers, Halley would always wait up for us on the front porch when we were out late with friends or on a date. She was our protector against skunks and raccoons that would saunter across our lawn at night time and it was a good thing we lived in the country, because her howls could reach the moon.

If you are a dog owner, you know how much joy they can bring to your life. And vice-versa, you are the center of your furry friend’s universe. Want to know a cool way to make them crazy-happy?

Try BarkBox! It’s a fun gift that every dog deserves.

The Happy Surprise Every Dog Deserves

Every pup deserves to have a smile on his or her face and let me tell you, a BarkBox surprise does this! It’s adorable and makes dogs go gaga with excitement. A puppy getting BarkBox is comparable to a kid on Christmas Eve…so fun and so cute! In fact, BarkBox would be a great gift to give a neighbor’s dog or your own fur baby.

We wanted to surprise our doggie friends Oscar and Otto–two Dachshunds that are the cutest duo.

Oscar and Otto are like the canine Batman and Robin, fighting off squirrels, scaring off criminals (aka solicitors), and making the world a better place with their chill big brother-little brother vibes.

Their BarkBox was full of treats and toys that had them both very curious.

What is BarkBox?

It’s a fun monthly surprise box just for dogs! You can give one as a one-time gift, or subscribe to a surprise box every month. Plans start at just $22 per month with a simple breakdown:

  • 12 Month Subscription: $22/BarkBox (best deal)
  • 6 Month Subscription: $25/BarkBox (most popular)
  • Month-to-month: $29/BarkBox (good for that friend or neighbor gift or occasional surprise)

Every box is valued at over $40 and spoils your pup with 5 high-quality items that you don’t see every day. Two toys, two bags of treats, and 1 chew tailored to your dog’s breed and preference.

Cool to note…each month features a different BarkBox theme. Previously there was “New York” and this month it’s “The Dog Daze.” So adorable. Or you can choose “Surprise me” for even more spontaneity like Oscar and Otto did.

They like to live life on the edge.

How does it work?

The thing I LOVE about BarkBox is that they are so interested in your dog’s personality. It’s so easy to get started with BarkBox

You’ll answer a few questions about your dog, like their name, size, and breed. They’ll ask if your dog has any allergies, which I think is super conscientious. After that, you simply choose which plan works best for you and your BarkBox is on it’s way to your furry friend!

If Otto (or Rover or Roxy) isn’t 100% happy with his or her BarkBox, they’ll work with you to make it right. Scout’s honor. To date, BarkBox has served over 2,000,000 happy dogs—how cool is that?

(I mean seriously check them out on Instagram…their doggy feed makes me smile every single day!)

Try this hot promo:

National Dog Day OfferCelebrate your cutie patootie pup on National Dog Day!

If you’re a dog parent (or sibling or friend) who loves to spoil your canine companions, you definitely need to try BarkBox. Give your dog a happy surprise to get all hyped up and slobbery for every month.

Surprise your pup now!

Oscar and Otto totally recommend it. Crime fighters by day and cozy snugglers by night…this dynamic duo definitely deserves a reward and your super pup does too.

Walk on the Wild Side: Adding A Little Print to Your Wardrobe

***We’re thrilled to team up with Walmart and RewardStyle on this post! All opinions are our own.***

If there’s one trend I’m seeing OVER and OVER for Fall, it’s animal print. We’re talking a walking zoo around here! I’ve seen leopard, snake skin, and all kinds of wildlife inspired prints! To be honest, I’m not sad about it! I feel like animal print, if done right, can be a timeless way to add some pizazz to ANY wardrobe. I know, for some of you, animal print may be a little more “wild” than you may be used to. That’s okay. Just start small!

First off, I have to tell you, I have found SO many awesome prints at Walmart.
From the mentioned animal print, to a classic stripe, you can find it all!
I love shopping Walmart! I find myself gravitating more so now than EVER because of so many new lines and styles
Plus, they offer FREE 2 day shipping (for purchases over $35) on most items! I love being able to have them shipped right to my door quickly.

Sometimes the seasons can get a bit crazy as we head into Fall. I like outfits that can take me from warmer temps of Summer to the chillier winds of Fall.
This leopard print dress meets ALL the marks.
Paired with the right accessories? You have an outfit for the office, date night, or any day of the week!

Leopard print Dress/hat/open shank booties/black satchel

This leopard print has almost a boho feel with the peasant style of the dress.
It’s so light weight and breezy, it works for even the warm temperature.
The tassel and embroidery add a special touch of detail that take this piece to a whole new level.
Don’t you think?

I also love the overall fitted, yet flowy style. I can’t stand things that are super tight (because, hello I have babies!), and this dress is totally slimming!

I’m a big fan of a neutral dress, layered with lots of different accessories.
This is one way to totally change the look of a style, even into different seasons.
Pair this with a leather jacket or a long black cardigan and you’re going to give this dress a totally different look!
Or don’t be afraid to wear something on your head!
This hat is a great lightweight option.
The black and brown leather banding are a perfect modern combination.

Confession: I used to NEVER mix blacks and browns, but now, I’m totally on board. I feel like the warm cognac brown compliments the deep black coolness. It’s in my opinion, an awesome balance. It also comes in some lighter colors you may love too!

The open shank shoes are almost identical to a MUCH more expensive pair, but these are better in my opinion. Great fit. Padded insoles. Fantastic design. And, of course the price is amazing.
The main reason I love this style of bootie is because of their versatility. They’re feminine and sleek enough to pair with a dress; however, they also look fantastic with jeans and a sweater. Again, that deep cognac color is a winner year round and it honestly pairs with just about ANY other color!
Just a note: I did feel these ran ever so slightly large, so if you’re between sizes, size down.

I also snagged this gorgeous black faux leather bag.
This bag is literally the PERFECT size.
Bigger than a crossbody. Smaller than a big tote.
I have room for all my stuff, and if I’m by chance packing some kiddo stuff, it fits too!

Accept the 7 Day Eat at Home Challenge – Save Time, Save Money, Save Your Sanity.

In conversation after conversation, I hear the same things from women.

“I want to eat healthy, but I don’t have time.”

“I’d love to sit down and eat with my family but our lives are just too crazy!”

“Meal planning, grocery shopping, meal prepping….it all stresses me out!”

or the infamous “I know it costs a lot to eat out, but it’s just convenient.”

If you have found yourself saying any of these statement, this is for you.

Hi, I’m Andrea. I’m a mom of 5 younger kids. I run a business from home. I have a husband, who is the best, but he works 70+ hours a week. I’m busy. I bet you are too.
I grew up with a mother who made home cooked meals DAILY and never allowed a paper plate on her table.
I admire her for that, but for me, life is a little different.
I’ve tried a million different techniques for feeding my family. I try to meal plan. I scour Pinterest searching for edible recipes that don’t take hours or call for ingredients requiring me to travel to foreign lands to track down a certain spice. Each method seemed to last temporarily before crashing and burning.

I knew there have to be answer.  A time saving, money saving, sanity saving answer – that didn’t taste like cardboard and come in the form of tatertot casserole (Sorry if you love that. I don’t!)

Then came the 7 day Challenge into my life.
I knew, if I had a group of women cheering me, and each other on, I could start a great habit.

Don’t start hyperventilating yet.
It’s going to be easy. and fun. and not expensive.

For 7 days, we are going to eat dinner at home. We’re going to make yummy, quick, even healthy recipes at home for our families.  We’re going to do it with you too!
We are going to go LIVE on our Facebook page 5 days  August-20-23rd and August 26-27 ( No lives on the weekend) at 1pm MST  with a new recipe.
You’ll be able to see how things are going up close and personal!

You can see the Facebook LIVE I did HERE, introducing it!

They even include, COLOR CODED GROCERY lists.

Back to School with Transitional Pieces from Walmart

***We’re thrilled to team up again with Walmart and RewardStyle on this sponsored post. All opinions are our own!***

My kids start school in T-minus one week and I’m all the emotions. Part of me, relieved that our return to structure is just around the corner. Part of me, broken hearted that 4/5 kids will be in school all day. How did I get here already?

We did all of our back to school shopping this year at Walmart. I’ve mentioned it again and again, I’m just SO impressed by the style and quality of clothing there – especially lately. Not to mention, with a big family, we have to be sure we’re shopping smart and Walmart is always affordable!

As the years go by and I become a slightly more seasoned mother, I realize that often when back to school shopping occurs, I leave with ALL summer weather clothing items. True, school starts when the sun is still blazing hot, but in just a few short weeks, those morning temperatures drop and I’m headed BACK to the store to stock up on warmer clothing and light layers to get us through. This year, I tried to mix things up and pick pieces that would transition from the heat to the cool and last me even longer. I found the BEST stuff, not surprisingly, at Walmart

My twin girls LOVE dresses, and though not always conducive to PE, I like to snag them a few.  I was super happy with the two they picked because the style was on point, and I felt like they could be worn NOW with say, sandals…and later with booties and a denim jacket.

First up was this mixed pattern dress

Does this come in my size? I’m obsessed.
It has a vintage feel with the different floral prints, higher neckline and let’s not forget those GORGEOUS ruffle sleeves! The details are the cherry on top!
I also really appreciate the knee length style of this dress. It’s easier for her to run around the playground and not be AS worried.
This dress is semi sheer, but comes with a connected tank slip under. As a mom, I love the fact I don’t have to piece together underclothing for modesty purposes. It’s ALL there in one, making my job easier.
We paired the dress with these casual sandals for warmer weather, but would choose booties like these, when the weather cools off.

My other daughter choose this gorgeous green, embroidered shirt dress to “match her eyes” and I’d say she choose wisely!
It’s a gorgeous Fall green with a pop of color in the floral design and that ruffle is just the right touch!

I mean, THAT DETAIL!? It’s perfection!

One of my girls also wanted a casual, yet FUN, look that would transition well between seasons and boy did we find it.
Can you even with this little fashionista?

Bomber Jacket set/Jeans/Sneakers

I was super excited to find this leopard bomber jacket in a SET with the graphic tshirt already paired with it. This is GOLDEN because again, it makes my job so much easier. She has layers already put together, making those school mornings easier on ALL of us.
We love the fun leopard print, but you can also find a similar set in plain colors HERE.
She’ll wear just the graphic tee when it’s hot out at recess or pair it with the jacket on those chilly Fall morning drop offs.
Lots of bang for your buck!

I also need to mention these under $9 skinny jeans. I was really impressed with the thickness of the jean and the quality of stitching. I am counting on these lasting the whole year. I will add that we felt like they ran a size big, so if between sizes, I would size DOWN for your kiddos.

We can’t go ANY further without mentioning these higher top sneakers.
My girls LOVE wearing boots, but honestly, they’re not always the best choice for the playground.
These wedge sneakers have an athletic type sole enabling them to run and get around in them so easily.
I appreciate the combo of style and practicality.
My daughter just thinks they’re “SO COOL!”
They also come in a pewter color HERE.

Now let’s talk about BOYS fashion.
If I’m being realistic, my two boys don’t care as much about what they wear. Often, it’s all I have just to get them out of bball shorts in the dead of January.
This year, my 4th child starts Kindergarten and though my heart is breaking, I’m so excited to watch him bloom.
I wanted him to have clothing that allowed him to MOVE and also, be independent.
He’s still only 5, and sometimes struggles with things like tying his shoe and zippers.
I was so excited about the style, and SOLUTIONS I found at Walmart.

First up, these light layers!
This hoodie is a super light cotton that won’t sweat him out if the lunch hour gets a little warm. It comes in several fun colors.
I paired it with these STINKING CUTE, moto style jogger pants.
These are an answer to a lot of mom stress. They’re ELASTIC waisted, so he’ll be able to take bathroom breaks on his own. I also really love the jogger style of pants because he can move around in them freely and not worry about tripping.

Now, let’s talk about shoes.
Dare I say, these may be my FAVORITE find of the whole haul. They’re a stylish athletic boot style, that again, allows him to keep up during a fierce game of tag, but CHECK OUT THE SHOELACES! They stay permanently tied and are fastened with a velcro PANEL.
I mean, WHO IS THIS GENIUS that thought of this?
He can get them on and off so easily by himself and though I fully plan on teaching him to tie his shoe this year, this is a good solution for the time being.
I really, REALLY love these and feel like it is my duty to tell every parent of their awesomeness.
You can get them HERE.

As the temperatures drop, this light layer hoodie is perfect for pairing with this reversible insulated vest.
For some reason, this little guy prefers a vest over a jacket and this was the perfect fit and thickness. I love that it’s reversible so you basically get two vests in one!
Lighter, but still warm. The neutral colors will go easily with just about anything too!

As you can see, we cleaned up for back to school!
I’m excited to find such stylish options that will transition well into Fall AND excited to see how much I saved!
Walmart is hands down, the best place to stock up for back to school this year!
