*We’re partnering with Enfamil NeuroPro™ to tell you about some great ways you can support your baby’s brain development!

My baby just turned eight months old and I’m beginning to realize more and more just how much he relies on me. I am his source for food, safety, comfort, and brain-enriching activities. I am his world.

That’s why my job as a mom is the most important in the world; I am shaping a little human. Cognitive development is vital to babies—it’s how they acquire knowledge and interact with the environment around them. Here are some ways I like to support my baby’s brain development, all while on our daily morning walk.

5 Brain-Boosting Activities with Baby While You Walk

Walking has become one of my favorite activities to do with my baby and I can tell he loves it too. His legs start kicking excitedly when we get ready to head out and he’s got a huge smile on his face. Being outside is a total sensory experience that we as adults have done so much that we’ve forgotten the magic. But to a baby, this is the FIRST time they are experiencing the feel of sunshine on their skin, the way the breeze ruffles their hair, and the many incredible sights and sounds associated with nature. While we walk, I like to focus on the following.

1. Sights

I like to point out the way the light reflects off the water, or the color of the leaves on the changing fall trees. Remember, your voice is your baby’s first exposure to language development, so even if your baby can’t respond yet, your verbal communication is vital to his or her development. Our favorite part of the walk is watching the geese. His eyes follow their every movement and when they waddle over to the water and plop in, he’s completely engrossed.

2. Sounds

Brain development depends on a total sensory experience and sounds play a huge part of that. The sound of my voice, along with my baby’s environment, are all helping his brain process sounds and make sense of them. Whenever we walk, I point out the sounds of birds whistling in the trees, children laughing at the park, and an airplane flying overhead.

 3. Taste

Do you remember the sensation of tasting something for the very first time? For a baby, everything is new and a huge part of their growth and development begins with proper nutrition. Introducing him to new soft foods has been so entertaining! The texture of mashed bananas, the taste of pureed green beans, and the coolness of a frozen popsicle are all experiences that help baby’s brain learn and grow!

In terms of nutrition, I breastfeed and supplement with Enfamil NeuroPro™ Gentleease formula which has a brain-building fat-protein blend of MFGM and DHA (previously only found in breast milk.*) Every mother is different, and I love the convenience of being able to feed my baby while we’re out and about, like on our morning walks.

Enfamil NeuroPro™ is the first and only formula to add MFGM as an ingredient in amounts supported by clinical research.

MFGM has been clinically shown to help close the gap in cognitive development between formula-fed and breastfed infants.**

There is a growing body of research that indicates that nutrition early in life may be important for learning later in the preschool years. (Source Enfamil)

Visit Enfamil.com or call 1-800-BABY-123 (1-800-222-9123) for more information and to request a free sample.

4. Touch

Babies are incredibly in tune with their sense of touch. My little guy loves the feel of his soft blanket and the first time I let him feel the grass, it was hilarious! His toes scrunched up and so did his face.

Whenever we take a walk, I bend down to let my baby feel the crunchy leaves, touch the bark of a tree, or feel the cold metal fence as we walk by. Babies learn so much from their sense of touch!

5. Smell

Finally, I like to point out any smells we encounter along our walks. Sometimes it will be a farmer burning weeds, or the smell of freshly mowed grass. I don’t know how much he understands, but I can see he is taking everything in. The world is exciting and brand new and I love being his guide in this new place.

If you want to support your baby’s brain development, it’s as simple as premium nutrition and a beautiful walk outside.

Footnotes:

*In amounts supported by clinical research. As measured by Bayley cognitive scores.

**As measured by Bayley-III cognitive score at 12 months in a different formula with MFGM added as an ingredient.

Healthy Self Care Habits (Relaxing & Reducing Anxiety) by Rachel Talbott

Healthy Self Care Habits (Relaxing & Reducing Anxiety)
Here are habits I try to keep on a regular basis, and definitely commit to when I'm feeling anxious or stressed.. It may seem like these habits take up so much time, but the key is to find the time and make it work for your schedule as best as you can. Stretch & Recover- Have you ever noticed how animals stretch when they wake up? It's amazing how much our body actually needs to stretch to release tension and pain. If the practice of yoga isn't for you, you can still do stretch flows that are amazing for your body, and feel as good as a massage or hot shower. Give yourself that minute for your body. It feels amazing, and keeps you flexible!! Heart Rate Up- As Elle Woods said in the movie Legally Blonde "Exercise gives you endorphins, endorphins make you happy.. Happy people just don't shoot their husbands.. They just don't" haha The truth is, exercise has been proven to be a stress reducer and actually life your mood. This is one of the number one reasons I exercise. It gives me an incredible mood boost and energy boost. It's like therapy both mentally and physically, and one of my most important self care habits.. The added benefit is feeling and looking sexy in your own skin. Self Reflection & Prayer- Being mindful and focusing on truth. There is a lot of noise. I personally try not to dwell on hypotheticals, or fearful thoughts. I can't focus or change how other people run their lives or how other people think.. I only have control over my own thoughts, and being conscience of how my own thoughts affect how I think about my self and others, and ultimately how I live my life. Self reflection is about prioritizing time to be honest and real with myself and God. Only then can I personally shift my own thinking and create healthier habits. Connect With Nature- I'm all for technology detoxes, drama detox, and finding and escape and distraction outside.. It's a bit harder in the winter months, but it might be a hike, a run, stepping barefoot in the grass, touching soil, feeling the sun in your eyes and on your skin. Literally taking that time to stop and observe nature.. It's relaxing and truly healing. Develop A P.M. Routine - Here are a few things that help me establish a healthy bedtime routine. -Herbal Tea -Calm Supplement -Gravity Blanket -Candles -A Good Book -Calm App -Sleep Tracking App (aim for 7-8 hrs whenever possible) ♥MY WEBSITE: http://www.racheltalbott.com ♥MY SHOP: http://www.PacificThyme.com/ ♥TWITTER: http://www.twitter.com/racheltalbott ♥INSTAGRAM: http://followgram.me/racheltalbott ♥MY PINTEREST: https://www.pinterest.com/racheltalbott/ ♥MUSIC CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/user/SingingProudAndLoud ♥VLOG CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/user/RachelTalbott ♥HUBBYS COOKING CHANNEL: http://www.youtube.com/ByronTalbott ♥FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/rachel.talbott ♥MAILING ADDRESS: 18653 Ventura Blvd., #655, Tarzana, CA 91356 * DISCLAIMER: The opinions expressed are true &my own. Mindful Eating – 5 Reasons to Stop Dieting Right Now!

Every diet I’ve ever tried has been successful. Until it wasn’t. Paleo. Vegan. Low-carb. Weight Watchers. South Beach. Mediterranean. Diabetic exchanges. You name it. I’ve tried it.

My weight loss generally maxes out at about 10 pounds before I start to slip in my resolve and throughout my adult life I’ve slowly gained weight. Every year. Except two. These were the two years I stopped dieting and gave mindful eating a try.

Mindful Eating

My naturopath suggested I stop dieting and read Intuitive Eating, the one book she said had helped her patients lose and keep weight off long term. So, I read it and I stopped dieting and over the course of two years I lost 50 pounds. It didn’t come off quickly and it wasn’t a direct path but I stopped obsessing over food and found peace with my body.

What is Mindful Eating?

Mindful Eating involves listening to your body’s hunger and fullness cues and striving to honor them. When you’re hungry, eat. When you’re full, stop eating. This can be difficult at first because chronic dieters have suppressed these signals for so long. I couldn’t even tell if I was hungry or full, much less what I really wanted to eat.

Another aspect of mindful eating is listening to your food preferences and giving yourself permission to eat the foods you truly enjoy. This also applies to exercise. Find ways to move your body that are appealing and enjoyable to you, not punishment for “bad” food choices or a way to pound your body into submission.

Whenever I’ve panicked and started dieting again and forgotten to listen to my body, the weight has crept back on. So, recently I found myself again fed up with dieting, back to intuitive, mindful eating. And my weight is slowly dropping again. Why do I need to relearn the same lesson over and over again? I’m not a diet expert, so obviously talk to your doctor before you make any changes to your diet or exercise routing and read some of the books listed at the end of this post.

Below are my top five reasons for giving up dieting.

Why You Should Stop Dieting Right Now

1. It Slows Your Metabolism

When you’re on a restrictive diet, your body can go into starvation mode. Your metabolism slows down and your body tries to hold on to every calorie. In Secrets from the Eating Lab, Traci Mann says, “When you aren’t taking in enough calories, your body makes storing those calories as fat the top priority, regardless of the dietary fat content of whatever you ate.”

Because most diets are restrictive, they’re unsustainable. Almost nobody wants to go the rest of her life without eating a piece of bread. So, you finally eat that bread and your body holds onto the calories for dear life, afraid that any moment you’ll be starving it again.

2. It Makes Food a Moral Issue

Food is fuel. Some fuels are better than others but what you choose to eat doesn’t make you good or evil. Why then, when we diet, are we constantly using self-shaming food-moralizing words?

I can’t count the number of times one of my friends or I have been eating a delicious meal or treat and said, “This is so bad. I shouldn’t be eating this. I’ve been so terrible lately.” We call certain foods “cheat” foods. Even food manufacturers label their products as “guilt-free,” indicating that if you eat other foods, you can and SHOULD feel guilty about it.

Shame and guilt should not be associated with eating if you want a healthy relationship with food. When we make food a moral issue, we open the door to dietary disfunction and eating disorders. And our kids watch and listen. Do you want your 4-year-old to feel guilty when she eats a donut at a birthday party?

3. It Suppresses Your Body’s Natural Hunger and Fullness Signals

When you’re following a strict food plan, you don’t listen to your body’s natural hunger and fullness signals. I’m hungry! Too bad. It’s not dinner time yet. Or, it’s past 8:30pm.

On some diets, I’ve been so obsessed with consuming a specific number of vegetables or certain food group exchanges on my “plan” that I’ve eaten well past the point of fullness because the diet required it. My body told me to stop. I wanted to stop. But I listened to the diet, rather than my body which knew exactly what I needed.

This only set me up to continue ignoring my hunger and fullness signals long after I’d given up on the diet and was back to eating bread and cheese for every meal.

4. It Isolates You

Have you ever turned down a dinner or party invitation because you were on a diet and knew you’d be surrounded by too many temptations? I have. And I’ve had friends tell me they couldn’t join me at a restaurant or social gathering because they were on a strict diet and weren’t comfortable being around “off-plan” foods. This makes me sad.

In my life, I don’t ever want voluntary food choices to be a barrier to my relationships with people. And when I feel isolated, I’m less likely to make healthy choices.

5. It Makes Unhealthy Foods Disproportionately Appealing

When I’m counting calories or points, I spend my entire day thinking about calories, points, and food in general. It becomes an obsession. This isn’t just me. I’ve read about studies that show how common this is in Secrets from the Eating Lab, online, and most recently in Scarcity by Sendhil Mullainathan and Eldar Shafir.

On Halloween a few years ago, I was completely off sugar. But I decided I could have just one piece of chocolate as a special treat. However, I couldn’t stop after just one. I had several mini chocolate bars from the trick-or-treat bucket. It just tasted so GOOD. I knew I wouldn’t be allowed to eat it the next day or possibly for the next few months. I ate way more than I wanted to, and way more than actually tasted good. And I felt horrible about myself.

This year I am back to mindful eating. I told myself I was welcome to have chocolate on Halloween if I wanted it, just like I would be allowed to have it on November 1st and 2nd and so on.

I had a couple of pieces. When I put the third piece in my mouth, it tasted incredibly sweet and I realized I didn’t have any interest in eating it. So, I spit it out. And I was done for the night.

When I can’t have chocolate, I want chocolate desperately. When I give myself permission to eat chocolate, it loses its hold over me.

This January consider making a goal to be kind to yourself, listen to you body, and find peace with food. You may not lose dramatic amounts of weight, but you will lose feelings of shame and guilt and you may just learn to love your body, whatever shape or size it’s in.

The Christmas Cake: Another way to celebrate Christ

A few years back my sons and I were enjoying lunch at our favorite Mexican restaurant on Maui – Taco Bell. My oldest noticed a “live mas” sign and asked what ‘mas’ meant. I told him that it is the Spanish word for more. He thought about it for a minute and said, “Mom, I know what Christmas means. It means ‘more Christ’.” The word Christmas does not derive from Spanish. It is of Greek & Latin origin. And the literal meaning has something to do with the Last Supper and Holy Communion, but I prefer my son’s translation. More Christ. Isn’t that what Christmas is all about? Inviting more Christ in to our lives.

With all the parties and presents, and food and festivities it is easy to forget what it is we are celebrating. I’m always looking for more ways to add more Christ to our Christmas. This Christmas cake is one of my family’s favorite Christ-centered Christmas traditions. And it couldn’t be easier, or tastier. Every year I bake a cake to go along with our annual Christmas feast. The details of the cake don’t matter. The flavor and style of the cake are not important. You can make it from scratch or from a box. You can fuss it up with all sorts of festive decor or keep things simple. The point is to have a cake. A birthday cake, to be specific. This cake is Jesus Christ’s birthday cake. It makes sense when you think about it, we are celebrating His birth & no birthday celebration is complete without a cake.

The Christmas Cake

I like to include my boys in the cake making process. They pick the cake flavor they are currently craving then help with the mixing, baking, and decorating. While we work we talk about who we are making the cake for. We talk about Him. We discuss His birth, His life, and His death; about what He has done for us and how grateful we are for Him. Then after our Christmas feast and before we dig in to our desserts we take a second to gather around the Christmas cake and sing happy birthday to the one we are celebrating. I find this physical reminder helps the little ones remember that Christmas is indeed Jesus Christ’s birthday. We started this tradition when my boys were little and many of the Christmas concepts were beyond their comprehension. This simple ceremony was right at their level. Now, years later my family still looks forward to our Christmas cake.

What are some ways you bring more Christ in to your Christmas? Leave a comment below, I’d love to hear!

Best of the Best Gifts for Kids, Tweens, and Teens

Image Map

If you’re like me, the holidays most often leave me at a loss as to what to gift my kids. So many toys have come and gone through our house, often getting discarded a few hours after the wrapping paper comes off. This year, I’m on the search for gifts that my kids will actually love and use. My search has led me to some of the best, through other parent recommendations, from my own experience being a mom of four—these are gifts that your kids will love!

Each image is linked for your convenience above with more details and reviews below.

Best of the Best Gifts for Kids, Tweens, and Teens

1. Cozy Coupe

Probably one of the greatest and most played-with toys we’ve ever owned. Every single family should have a Cozy Coupe. I can’t tell you how many photos I have of my kids in their Cozy Coupe—I can look back and literally see them grow up with this beloved toy.

2. Highlights

Give a super unique gift and inspire a love for reading at the same time with a subscription of Highlights Magazines. Each month your child or grandchild will get a fun surprise in the mail—it’s the gift that keeps giving all year! I got these as a kid and couldn’t wait every month for the new Highlights to come.

3. Under Armour Faves

My kids adore Under Armour and since they are so active in sports, I love giving them athletic clothes that actually last. Check out these great holiday Under Armour promos going on for a great deal!

4. Kiwi Crate

This is another fun gift that keeps giving, rather than a one-time open and done. Kiwi Crate delivers cool science and art projects (which kids love!) for all ages to you each month. It’s a great way to engage your kids creatively. Save 30% off your first month with the code Share30.

5. Toys That Ignite Baby’s Curiosity

I was gifted a Baby Einstein activity table for my very first baby shower and that is the ONE toy that all four of my babies have loved. It’s always hard to know what to get baby for Christmas, but you can’t go wrong with this. You can find the Baby Einstein Curiosity Activity table on Amazon or here at Walmart.

6. Flip Sequins

These are all the rage with kids right now! Check out the adorable flip sequins sweatshirts, shirts, and even pants at Abercrombie Kids that are on sale right now!

7. Adorable Jammies

There are jammies and then there are CUTE jammies and these personalized Mermaid Dreams Pjs from Chasing Fireflies take the cake! Check out the adorable personalized holiday pj’s along with their great clearance section. Jammies are a must in our house on Christmas Eve.

Through November 19th, use the code CF57400 to get 25% off your ENTIRE order.

8. The Best, Most Affordable Smartphone

If your tween or teen is ready for his or her own smartphone, check out the new Alcatel 7 smartphone that is perfect as a first phone and it is soooo affordable! Seriously, check out the price… no need to stress what your kids will do to it.

The Alcatel 7 is packed with features usually available only on smartphones that cost hundreds of dollars more, including dual rear cameras with portrait mode, face unlock technology and fingerprint sensor. The battery handles up to 28 hours of talk time in a single charge.

Now that is the stocking stuffer that they will really go crazy over.

9.  Join the Pickleball Craze

Unless you’ve been living in the dark for a while now, you’ve probably noticed that people everywhere are going gaga over pickleball. And it’s no wonder…this fun and competitive game can be played at any age and is an addictive combination of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton.

Get your crew set up with a pickleball starter kit this season. It’s a great sport to play indoors! You can find pickleball essentials and all kinds of fun sporting goods at Holabird Sports.

10. Just for Funsie Onesie

Another hot ticket item this year is the ever eyebrow raising onesie. Cooky as they are, kids absolutely LOVE them. My 9-year-old adores this one. More fun styles here!

7 Funny Picture Books

If you are looking for funny, nay, the FUNNIEST picture books, I’ve got some for you. You may know that I work with picture book authors on a regular basis. This means I get to hear all about the picture books that they’re loving. Not only will these be your favorite picture books [to read one hundred times, over and over again], but they make great gifts, too!

The Funniest Picture Books:

#1: Magnolia Says DON’T!

The fourth book in the “Magnolia Says DON’T!” picture book series just hit the shelves, If You Ever Want to Bring a Pirate to Meet Santa, DON’T! This would be the funniest picture book to add to your Christmas to-read list!

Comically expressive and detailed digital artwork that seems to shout from the page.”―Wall Street Journal

#2: Potato Pants!

This read-aloud is also new on the shelves this year. Just the title rolling off the tongue is funny – Potato Pants! Slapstick humor, alliteration, over-the-top situations, plus the narrator make for a hilarious read. Laurie Keller is also a Geisel-award winning creator, so you know the art is a-mazing, too.

#3: Monster’s New Undies

Samantha Berger writes great books for naughty children — haha! Berger is best known for her Crankenstein stories, so if you loved her humor in those, you’ll love her latest funny picture book, Monster’s New Undies. This picture book utilizes kid-friendly language in verse (aka: rhyming). The author uses every word for ‘rear-end’, which will have your kiddo roaring with laughter.

#4: Mother Bruce

If you haven’t read Mother Brucethis is totally one to add to your picture book library. This funny picture book took me by surprise and made me laugh out loud in the book store. It’s funny, sweet, and has a great twist at the end. Definitely a winner!

“Higgins turns classic picture-book scenarios upside down, then wrings them for contemporary laughs.” — The New York Times

#5: Wordy Birdy

Tammi Sauer writes tons of funny picture books.  Wordy Birdy is about a very chatty, very distracted bird. This is a great story about friendship and being attentive to the things going on around you.

laugh-out-loud funny . . . caregivers will certainly find this chuckleworthy.”—Kirkus

#6: Snappsy

I’ve mentioned Snappsy the Alligator before in my Holiday Book + Gift article. This funny picture book about a reluctant star pairs well with an alligator stuffed animal, or a baby clip-on tie if you’re giving it as a gift.

#7: The Pigeon Needs a Bath

I had to include my all-time favorite Mo Willems bookThe Pigeon Needs a BathI’ve read this book a billion times with my own kids. Definitely a fun one to have in your home library.

Being Kind and Cozy: See It, Share It, Live It

*We’re partnering with Abercrombie Kids to help share their Be Kind & Cozy campaign and I can think of nothing better than those two things.

My son has a sign in his second grade class that they read together every day. It says,

You can’t control how others act, but you can control what you choose to do. Be the nice kid.”

Of all the things my kids can be in this world, my biggest wish is that they be kind. But how do we teach kindness? It’s a question I think about often, and while there are plenty of ways, here are three that I love.

Be Cozy and Kind

It only takes one mean kid to ruin a day or put a fissure in a child’s confidence. I’ve been there. I’ve had to listen to my sweet Kindergartner tell me that one of the girls in her class told the rest of the kids to run away from her at recess. “We don’t want to play with you” they said.

Those stories are hard.

But where one act of meanness can dent a child, one simple act of kindness can completely transform them. A few days later, my same Kindergartner told me about how she fell and scraped her knee at school. One little girl came and put her arm around Piper and wiped her tears with a tissue in her pocket while another girl ran to get a bandaid.

Kids who are kind make all the difference.

Be the nice kid.

See It

One great way to encourage kindness is by visual reminders, like the sign in my son’s classroom, or a graphic shirt with a kind reminder.

Kids can also learn to be kind by seeing you being kind. Parents, teachers, neighbors, friends…we all owe it to children to show them what it means to be kind. Our example is more powerful than we know.

A few nights ago, I was playing basketball with my 8-year-old son at our local YMCA. A girl in his class came up and asked him if he wanted to play with her. My heart melted as he shyly nodded yes. She looked at me and said, “Nixon is the nicest boy in the whole class.” I nearly cried.

Be the nice kid.

Share It

Another way to stay cozy and kind is to share our light. This may mean making a yummy treat and dropping it off to a neighbor. Kids excel at this!

Giving kids the opportunity to serve will help them develop inherent kindness that will truly make the world a better place.

Here are some ideas that can help kids share their light:

Live It

Finally, the very best way to encourage kindness is to live it every single day. Whether it’s the way we interact with our own family members or the people we encounter in our daily lives, we should always strive for kindness.

A HowDoesShe reader once shared a story with me that I’ve never forgotten. Her son came home from school near starved and as she made him a sandwich she asked him why he didn’t eat his lunch. Getting quiet, he said that another kid in his class frequently didn’t have a lunch, so he gave him his. “Mom,” he said, “can you pack me two lunches tomorrow. One for me and one for Kevin?”

Be the nice kid.
