Make Dad’s Stories into a Book with Storyworth

*We are happy to collaborate with StoryWorth and let our readers know about their great concept of turning your family’s treasured stories into books you can cherish forever. StoryWorth makes the perfect gift for dad or grandpa! In the past few years, I’ve become more and more aware of my parents’ aging. While I’ve been busy chasing my own kids, they are growing older. Maybe that’s why I’ve felt the urgent need to know their stories. Not only that, but have them written down, so that my children can know how cool their grandparents are.

Just like your life, mine has been richly blessed by special dads and grandpas. They’ve been there to jump my car at a moment’s notice and have offer sage advice when I’ve needed it most. Those dads, grandpas, and fathers-in-law have enriched us with their jokes, their wisdom, and especially their stories.

Turn Dad’s Life into a Book This Father’s Day

Do not let another day go by without learning all you can about the patriarchs in your life. This Father’s Day, give a gift so special that it will be a family heirloom for years to come. Turn dad’s life into a book with StoryWorth.

StoryWorth is an online company that turns your stories into a beautiful hardcover book. It’s like writing your own memoir without having to deal with a publisher! Here’s how it works.

First, sign up through this link to save $20! When you go in together with your siblings, this makes a great inexpensive gift! Next, your dad or grandpa (or whomever you are gifting StoryWorth to) will get an email telling them how to get started. It’s incredibly easy and anyone who can answer an email can do StoryWorth.

Each week dad gets an email with a unique question inside. He types his answer and then everyone in your family can read it. At the end of the year, StoryWorth will send dad a high-quality hard-bound book with all of his stories inside and a customized photo on the cover. I promise you will not find another gift this special.

What Things Will You Learn?

Because each StoryWorth question is so unique, you will learn some cool, fun, and even crazy things about your dad. This is one of my favorites from my father-in-law’s StoryWorth and probably something I would never have learned otherwise.

Question: Who was your first crush and what was special about them?

Answer:

My first crush was LaDonna S. in 7th grade. She was a cute little girl with brown hair and invited a bunch of friends over to her house for a party. It was a dance party in the basement of her home. The music was loud and a lot of people were running up and down the stairs. Well for some reason I thought I would skip a few and jump down the stairs to be cool. It was then it all went bad…hitting my head on the ceiling of the stairs it about knocked me out and I still remember the huge bump on my head lasting days.

Well I walked her home from school several times and called her on the phone a bunch, but after a while it all fizzled out. Good thing cuz I didn’t have time for both her and my new drum set!

Good Men, Good Stories

The dads in your life are full of amazing stories. My Grandpa Forbush could tell you Navy stories that would make you ask, “Grandpa, did that really happen?” My Grandpa Richards had these one-of-a-kind jokes that would make you giggle every time. “Do you know how many people died in that cemetery? All of ‘em!” I wish I had a StoryWorth book for each of them.

My dad used to tell us kids bedtime stories about when he was a kid—the day he found a baby fox and decided it would be a good idea to keep it as a pet; his first time “taking care” of a chicken (aka chopping its head off for dinner!). These stories need to be recorded!

My father-in-law is a treasure chest full of gems. He’s one cool grandpa that can spin a tale that gets the kids all bug-eyed. He’s a self-taught kind of guy who’s learned how to play the ukulele and how to create stained glass, all in his grandpa years. These are the kind of stories that need recorded for your family forever.

Not only will you learn more about your parents and grandparents through StoryWorth, but you will paint a picture for future generations about who their ancestors were.

How cool is it to know where you come from? StoryWorth can be a valuable piece of geneology.

Give the Gift of Storyworth

Give the gift of StoryWorth to the dads in your life. Call up your siblings, go in together on this special gift, and give dad something truly sentimental that your whole family will treasure forever.

Get your $20 Off StoryWorth Offer Here

I’d even buy StoryWorth for myself. There ares to many stories that are fresh in my mind that I’d love my kids to know about. At the end of the year, you’ll have a beautiful book full of your own unique personal stories that you can read to your children and grandchildren over and over again. They’ll never guess you were so cool!

*StoryWorth sponsored this post. All thoughts, opinions, and anecdotes are my own.

7 Ways To Pull Yourself out of a Mom Funk

We’ve all been there before. Had an hour, or a day, or a week where you’re just not feeling it. You can look at dishes on the kitchen counter crusted over with this morning’s fruit rings and think, Not today. There’s a fight breaking out over who gets the last stick of gum and you just think, Nope, not dealing with it.

If the term ‘mom funk’ is not in the dictionary (which it’s not–I just checked), then who do we call to get it in there because mom funks happen. They are real.

Mom funks are times when you feel sluggish, unmotivated, overwhelmed, or just plain exhausted. Here are seven ways you can conquer that mom funk and get back to doing what you do best!

7 Ways To Pull Yourself out of a Mom Funk

1. Crank up your favorite tunes.

You know when your favorite jam comes on, even if you didn’t feel like dancing before, your head starts bobbing and your feet start tapping to the beat. Music has the power to heighten your mood and flip your switch from “zapped” to “energized!”

When I’m in a mom funk, I’ll leave the kids in my husband’s capable hands, get in my car and crank up some Lady Gaga, then drive to Target where retail therapy awaits. Try the songs on our ultimate feel-good playlist for an instant mood-booster.

2. Exercise the demons.

Although it may be the last thing you feel like doing, exercise is probably the best thing you could do to pull yourself out of a rut. Just don’t want to? Put your workout clothes on and point your car toward the gym. Chances are, once you get there, you’ll get your heart pumping, endorphins flowing, and you’ll feel so much better by the time you leave.

3. Call a pal.

Stop. Take three seconds right now to think of the one person you’d want to talk to when you were feeling a bit down. The first person who came to your mind should be the one you call when you’re knee-deep in a mom funk.

Calling a friend who can empathize, encourage, and leave you feeling lighter is an excellent way to shrug off a funk. Avoid those friends who like to bounce complaints back and forth. That type of negativity isn’t what you need right now.

4. Go outside, get some fresh air.

If you want to forget the banalities of mom-life that are weighing you down—the never-ending laundry, the diapers that aren’t changing themselves—then get outside. Oxygen is nature’s Xanax and the outdoors are full of it.

If you’re feeling blah and don’t know why, try taking a walk. Cruise your block or even better, explore nature. Nothing cures a mom funk better then getting outside of the house. Take a hike and lose yourself. When you get back, that mountain of laundry is easier to tackle once you’ve scaled actual mountains.

5. Stare your issues in the face.

On the other hand, sometimes you need to grab your issues by the shirt-tail and say, “Hey, we’ve got some unfinished business to deal with here.”

Address the reason or reasons you are feeling sluggish, unmotivated, and generally down. Facing the cause instead of trying to ignore them is sometimes the best way to work through a funk and view the sun peeking out the other side.

6. Take a break.

Maybe one of those issues causing your funk is too much work, stress, or too many drumsticks on your plate. (Seriously, no one can eat that many drumsticks.)

Give yourself permission to take a break. Say no to the next three drumsticks someone offers you. Want to head up the Muffins with Mom committee at school? I think I’ll pass this time. Can you watch my kids for the afternoon? Not this time, but ask me again another. Mom, can you finish my science project for me? No, I’m afraid that would rob you of a valuable learning experience.

The art of keeping a well-balanced zen is knowing your drumstick threshold. If two big drumsticks is doable, but a third will tip the plate, stick with two.

7. Seven minutes in heaven {alone}.

Moms can’t even go to the bathroom alone; it’s no wonder we get burnt out from time to time from all the constant neediness we face.

If you’re feeling yourself sliding into a mom funk, sneak away for seven minutes alone. Close your closet door and take a quick power nap. If the kids are playing happily in the playroom, go to the cleanest spot in the house and just sit there for seven minutes and breath. Don’t fold clothes, don’t turn on your phone. Just be alone and relish every single minute of it.

Moms, you are incredible. You power society and represent everything good that comes out of it. Thank you. You deserve an award, but until they start giving out Mammys, none of us will be walking down the red carpet soon. Love yourselves, give yourselves a break, and know that we’ve all taken on a few too many drumsticks in our day, just like you.

7 Reasons Why Disney Cruise Line is Different From Other Cruises

Did you hear the news? Disney Cruise Line has just announced their Fall 2018 itineraries! The itineraries will be available to book on May 18th and we are so excited.
Why?
Because Disney Cruise Line is perfect for families and has so much to offer!

We book ALL our Disney trips AND all our vacations in general with Getaway Today. They are the best agency out there and do such a good job making sure everything is taken care of  – at the lowest cost!
Here are 7 reasons why Disney Cruise Line is different from other cruises and worth every dime!

The best part is that you can book your 2018 Disney cruise with only a deposit and don’t have to pay the remaining balance until about 90 days before you sail. You always get the best price and availability when you book sooner rather than later. Plus, our friends at Get Away Today can take care of every detail, from booking the cruise to setting up airfare, transportation and excursions at the ports. Make sure to call them at 877-510- 2929 for quotes and to book your Fall 2018 Disney cruise starting on May 18th . Mention HOWDOESSHE for some extra savings and treats!

When you choose a Disney cruise, you’ll be able to choose from itineraries with stops to experience the pink sand beaches of Bermuda, turquoise waters of the Caribbean, exciting culture of Mexico and Disney’s private island in the Bahamas. Or, choose from itineraries with stops throughout Europe, the Panama Canal and even Canada. These amazing destinations aren’t the only reason to book a Disney cruise. In fact, we have seven reasons why Disney Cruise Line is different from other cruises – making it a top choice for family cruising.

Here’s why we think you should choose a Disney cruise for your next family vacation:

Rotational Dining.
On most cruise ships, your family will have an assigned table in one banquet room with different food choices rotated for each dinner. Not on Disney Cruise Line! On a Disney cruise, you’ll actually dine in a different themed restaurant each night. This means you’ll be able to sample all kinds of different cuisines and atmospheres throughout the length of your cruise. Your servers will follow you to each restaurant as well, providing you with excellent service at each and every dinner. The rotational dining provided on every Disney cruise lets your family experience everything the ship has to offer when it comes to fine dining. We’re sure you’ll have a hard time choosing a favorite, but we love Tiana’s Place on the Disney Wonder, Lumiere’s on the Disney Magic, and the Enchanted Garden on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. You won’t need to worry about making reservations in advance for any of the restaurants since you receive your dining schedule when you embark. Just sit back, relax and enjoy some of Disney’s best cuisine.

Disney Characters.
The only place to meet Disney characters while navigating the high seas is a Disney cruise, of course. On top of the exciting entertainment offered each day, your family will have the opportunity to meet a variety of Disney characters throughout your cruise. Characters are subject to change, but include fan-favorites like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald and Daisy Duck, Chip ‘n Dale, Pluto, Sofia the First and Doc McStuffins. Select ships offer opportunities for character breakfasts and meeting the Disney princesses. Tickets are required for these popular events, but are included in your cruise fare. Certain itineraries even offer themed deck parties. Your family will be able to celebrate Halloween, Star Wars Days, Marvel Days, Christmastime and more with characters dressed for the occasion during these lively events.

Fireworks.

Speaking of deck parties, Disney Cruise Line is the only cruise line to offer impressive fireworks displays while sailing. There’s almost nothing more magical than watching booming fireworks while they’re reflected on the waves below! Fireworks are offered one night out of almost every Disney cruise, usually accompanied by a deck party like Pirate Night or Stars Wars Day at Sea. Some Alaskan itineraries cannot include fireworks because of the protected waters you’ll be sailing through. Just make sure to check the cruise itinerary before you go to know whether fireworks will be included or not. It’s also important to note that the fireworks display is subject to change on any cruise itinerary, but Disney does their best to provide guests with the beautiful nighttime show.

Kids’ Clubs.

While most cruise lines offer a kids’ club or two, Disney Cruise Line goes above and beyond. Each Disney cruise ship offers four youth clubs so that kids of all ages have a space to play and be themselves. Don’t worry about letting your kids experience the clubs and activities by themselves, either. Disney has one of the safest programs for their kids’ clubs and performs a background check on every person sailing. Now that you know your kids will be safe as they gallivant around the ship, here’s all the fun they can enjoy with the kids’ clubs:

– Kids three to 12 years old will have a blast at Disney’s Oceaneer Club. They’ll be able to interact with Disney characters throughout the day, whether it’s learning to luau with Lilo and Stitch or race with Mickey. Crafts, immersive experiences and more are also included on a daily basis. Age recommendations are offered for the activities, but participation is completely up to the kids. That means that siblings and friends falling within the three to 12 age range can play together without any restriction.

– Disney’s Oceaneer Lab is the second club offered for kids three to 12 years old. The theming changes on each ship, but activities like learning how to draw Disney characters, watching movies and hunting for treasure are always included. Plus, the Oceaneer Lab offers guided group activities like helping Stitch catch Dr. Jumba’s experiments or putting on a comedy show to power up Monstropolis. You won’t have to worry about siblings being separated at the Oceaneer Lab, either. As long as the siblings are three to 12 they’ll be able to participate in any of the activities offered throughout the day.

– For kids 11 to 14, Disney offers the youth club, Edge. At Edge, your younger teens will be able to interact with tweens from around the world. On top of high-tech entertainment like video game systems and karaoke machines, they’ll be able to learn improv and race against the clock to complete team challenges for daily bragging rights. It’s the perfect hangout for any tween!

– If you have older kids aged 14 to 17, the Vibe youth club is where you’ll find them during your Disney cruise. The teens-only hangout includes both a media room and dance floor, offering something for everyone. Daily challenges and activities are also offered for teens who would like to participate.

It’s no wonder so many parents love Disney Cruise Line! Disney’s youth clubs offer so much more than other cruise lines, all included in the price of your vacation. If you have littles ones under three, Disney also offers the “it’s a small world” nursery. The nursery is additional and requires reservations, but opens a perfect opportunity for Mom and Dad to spend a romantic lunch or dinner together while the kids are having fun.

No Casinos.

Disney Cruise Line wants every cruise to be as family-friendly as possible, which is why you won’t find any casinos on their ships. Instead, Disney had dedicated these spaces to be areas for families to enjoy together. The Disney Cruise Line does offer relaxing adult-only areas as well – providing a true oasis for when you need a little peace and quiet.

First-run Disney Movies.

Is a new Disney movie being released while you’re sailing on your Disney cruise? The Buena Vista Theatre on each ship means you won’t have to worry about missing it. The Art Deco and Art Nouveau styled theater features both first-run films and classic Disney films for no additional cost. Show times are spread throughout the day, so your family can plan a full day of activities and still have time to enjoy a Disney movie. You can’t beat seeing a new Disney movie in the middle of the ocean!

Castaway Cay.

When you select certain Bahamian and Caribbean itineraries, your Disney cruise will include a stop or two at Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island paradise. From snorkeling and waterslides to beach volleyball and kids’ club hangouts, there’s something for everyone at Castaway Cay. The island is only open to Disney Cruise Line guests and offers a beautiful beach and lagoon. Your meals are included here and you can use your room key for any souvenir purchases, making Castaway Cay one of the easiest ports to navigate. You can purchase an excursion like swimming with sting rays or fly fishing. Or, simply lounge on the beach and enjoy all the beauty the pristine island has to offer.

As you can see, Disney Cruise Line is definitely different from other cruise lines. In fact, it may just be the most family-friendly cruise line available right now. Which is why you should plan a family cruise on the Disney Cruise Line in 2018! You can already book for early 2018, with fall 2018 itineraries becoming available May 18, 2017. Booking as soon as possible is the only way to get the best rate and availability on a Disney cruise. To book your 2018 Disney cruise, give our favorite travel agency Get Away Today  a call at 877-510- 2929. Get Away Today’s cruise department can answer all of your questions while booking your 2018 Disney cruise. They also help with every part of your vacation, including any transportation, excursions, and adding land packages to your cruise. Just don’t forget to mention How Does She sent you!

3 Essential Oils essential for Summer!

If you’ve been around these parts for long, you’ll know that we are firm believers in using essential oils. We use them here. We use them there. We even use them in our hair. I love essential oils so much they even make me rhyme like Seuss! 😉

Everyone has their favorite oils but I’m going to tell you about 3 oils that I could not live without during the sticky, buggy summer months.

I live in the deep south where the chiggers are thick and you can’t even go out in the backyard without bringing a tick back inside with you. Maybe I haven’t lived enough places to know how the bugs are in other areas of the world but y’all, it’s insane here!

I few years ago I decided I had enough with all the chemicals I was slathering all over myself and my kids. I probably read and research too much (#momlife) but I just haaaad to find something natural that actually worked. I heard about essential oils and the rest is history. 4+ years later and still think essential oils are the most magical thing EVER. I could go on and on about their magical powers but I want to share my 3 favorite oils with you that are especially handy in the summer months.

Lemon, Peppermint, and Lavender – if you didn’t buy yourself but 3 oils these three musketeers are the ones I would suggest you buy. They’re magical on their own but become a superpower when you mix them together.

What you will need:

Add 20 drops of each oil and top it off with a carrier oil in your glass bottle.

I keep it with me at all times. It helps the itch associated with those pesky summer bug bites. Plus, did ya know it’s amazing to help with seasonal allergies?! You can apply to the back of your neck, on sinuses, and chest to help relieve seasonal discomfort.

I use this daily on either myself or my kids. Before bed, we take inventory of all their itchy spots and I roll over the spots with the bottle of magic and boom, no getting out of bed to complain that they’re too itchy to sleep. (does everyone else’s kids do that or is it just me?!)

And just as a reminder, lemon oil is photosensitive. This means you should take extra precaution out in the sun when using lemon oil.

I recommend you try it out for yourself. Seeing (or not itching!) is believing. Tis the season for this trio powerhouse of essential oils!

Want to learn more about essential oils but don’t know where to start? This post can break it down for you. We highly recommend you start with the premium starter kit – it includes lemon, lavender, and peppermint along with several other oils to get you started off right. We love Young Living oils and after much research, it’s the only brand we trust for our families. Did you know that Young Living is the ONLY brand of oils that allow people to visit their farms and even partake in the harvesting?! How neat is that! No other essential oil company will let you visit their farms. This was a no-brainer for me when I was trying to find a pure therapeutic brand of oils to use. I love a transparent company and can trust them which is so VERY important.

We LOVE Young Living and think you will too!

And join in on our essential oils discussion on facebook. We have a closed group just for discussing essential oils and how to use them. Hop over HERE and request to join!

The Final Reveal and 6 BIG Tips for Keeping the Weight Off*

*Thank you Jenny Craig for sponsoring this post. Tried other diets? It’s time for Jenny Craig!

Hi, I’m Katie and if you’ve been following my weight loss journey, you’ll know that I started out three months ago weighing 60 pounds more than I wanted to and at my wits end on where to turn. I’ve tried diet after diet with no real results. This time was different. This time I tried Jenny Craig and I can honestly say it has changed my life.

Three Months Later…The Big Reveal

Those who know me best will say that I am a self-sacrificer. I devote my days doing things for other people: my kids, my husband, my friends. With the help of my consultant at Jenny Craig, I now see that I deserve to take care of myself as well. I owe that to Katie.

Jenny Craig is not just a diet. It’s an amazing program that teaches you more about yourself than you ever knew. It’s not easy, although Jenny Craig makes it super convenient for you by sending healthy food directly to your home, or you can go into a center too. Whichever works for your lifestyle! Jenny Craig also gives you a personal consultant to help you all along the way. Jenny Craig gives you the tools and then you use them to get the body you want.

You can see for yourself the progress I’ve made in just 90 days on the Jenny Craig program!

Month 1: Total weight lost= 8 pounds.*

Month 2: Total weight lost= 16 pounds.*

Month 3: Total weight lost with the Jenny Craig program= 26 pounds.*

*Results not typical. Members following the Jenny Craig program, on average, lost 1-2 lbs. per week. I received promotional consideration.

6 Big Tips for Keeping the Weight Off*

If you’re ready to lose weight for good, I’m here to tell you Jenny Craig works. If you want to keep the weight off for good–which I know for me will be a daily battle and one I’ll gladly fight–then here are 6 inspiring tips from my sage Jenny Craig consultant Rosanne. She really rocks!

1. Stop letting the weight hold you back.

For years I stopped myself from throwing a ball out in the backyard with my kids because my weight made excuses for me. I’d tried and talked myself out of running a half marathon because of those extra pounds. The funny thing is, those activities would’ve brought me better health and happiness all along!

Stop letting your weight be the excuse that holds you back from doing what you really want to do.

Last weekend, I did something HUGE for myself. I finally ran a half marathon—13.1 miles from start to finish. It was so hard, but the quote that I kept repeating over and over was, “She believed she could so she did.” After getting home and limping to the couch, my daughter brought me my necklace with that quote on it and I couldn’t help but cry happy tears because of all the hard work and emotions that brought me to this point.

If you believe you can, you will.

2. It’s time to think differently about food.

My personal Jenny Craig consultant told me as this experience winds down, that it’s time to start thinking differently about food. Every meal and snack comes with a choice. Think about the momentary satisfaction of eating fattening or high-calorie foods and compare it to the hard work that goes into burning those calories off.

Before you eat, think “Where will this end up on my body and is it worth it?”

Jenny Craig makes the eating part easy. They provide 6 premium meals a day—3 main meals and 3 snacks, and they’re all really yummy. Jenny Craig sets you up with healthy habits and then gives you the courage to maintain them.

3. Integrate healthy living for your whole family.

Don’t be the Lone Ranger on your quest for better health—get your whole family involved! You’ll be much more successful in the long run if you cut back on sugar for the entire family and keep fruit instead of cookies handy.

An unexpected perk of doing the Jenny Craig program is that it has made exercise and healthy eating contagious in my family. My oldest daughter wants to start an exercise routine and is trying to make better food choices. That’s super exciting to me! We’re going to start running together.

4. Make it a lifelong priority.

One quote I’ve printed out and hang on my fridge says,

“One reason people resist change is because they focus on what they have to give up, instead of what they have to gain.” (Author Unknown)

Dang this quote has helped me so much! My Jenny Craig consultant Rosanne talked to me quite frankly about my choices.  She has seen it before where someone will commit, and then have a “special occasion” and take a break or just quit. If you choose to prioritize weight loss and maintenance in your life, then you will succeed.

For myself and many of you, we might have to fight for it the rest of our lives, but if it’s a lifelong priority, it’s doable.

5. Improve your self-care.

There’s no way around this one. If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you’re going to have to devote time to Y.O.U.

That means going to bed earlier and making sure you get regular, quality sleep. It means making exercise a part of your daily routine and drinking plenty of water. If you can chisel away time for those three things: sleep, exercise, and water, then you can make the Jenny Craig program work longterm for you.

6. This is the NEW you!

Today I weighed in at 165 pounds and I’m hoping tomorrow will be even less. This is the new me and I’m excited to get to know her better.

The other day, my Jenny Craig consultant had a funny request. She asked me to stop thinking about what it was like to live 26 pounds heavier. I might not realize it, but when we carry excess weight, it gets in the way of living life more fully. It’s time to let that person go and welcome the new, healthier version of myself in.

Here’s to the new Katie and here’s to the new you!

If you’re ready to give Jenny Craig a try, just buckle down and do it. You owe it to yourself and you deserve it.

There are over 600 Jenny Craig centers in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Puerto Rico with over 2,500 consultants worldwide ready to help you get started. Food costs vary for each member, but start at $3.69 per item, plus the cost of shipping.

I can honestly say the Jenny Craig program has changed my life for the better. I’ve found myself having more fun with my kids—it’s been awhile since I’ve played catch with them. Today I weighed in at 165 pounds and I’m hoping tomorrow will be even less*. Every day, I’m just going to keep going. She believed she could so she did.

This post was sponsored by Jenny Craig and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

*Results not typical. Members following the Jenny Craig program, on average, lose 1-2 lbs per week. I received promotional consideration.
