Things to Do in Thailand with Kids | Our Family Trip to Thailand

Hi, I’m Alison J Prince, Last year my family took a trip to Thailand. My husband and I had wanted to do this volunteer trip with our kids for years. We headed to Chiang Mai and that’s located in the northern part of Thailand. We stayed there for a little over 3 weeks. Pomelo Travel helped us make this trip happen. Our guides, Chris and PeeTee were amazing.

They showed us the way so we could enjoy the trip.

Towards the end, we did a volunteer project up at a school.

I would vote this as a life-changing trip.  We also found some things to do in Thailand with kids and are sharing those with you here.

Check Out These Things to Do in Thailand with Kids

Check out this video showing some of the things to do in Thailand with kids.   BE aware…the elephants will make you want to visit Thailand!

Play with elephants: We booked a trip to play with elephants at Elephant Jungle Sanctuary through Pomelo Travel.  The Elephant Jungle Sanctuary raises awareness and teaches people about the care of elephants and the plight of Asian elephants.

  • Run up the Sticky Waterfall: About 60km north of Chiang Mai city, in the Sri Lanna National Park, is the Bua Tong waterfall.  The Bua Tong is nicknamed the Sticky Waterfall because the water flows over tiers of limestone rocks that have a sticky feel to them and provide great traction when walking on them.  Another one of the things to do in Thailand with kids can be done while you are here and that is catching Thai fish.  Our boys had a grand time catching fish with cups!
  • Taste new food: Sunday night market
  • Buy handmade sandals: Sunday night market
  • $3 foot massages:  Sunday night market
  • Thai fast food: – food stands along the road
  • Master the art of bug catching: Everywhere!
  • Count Buddhas: Bann Temples
  • Learning how bathroom is written in Thai
  • Cook a Thai dinner from scratch
  • Jumping in puddles in a flash flood
  • Catch crabs in a rice field
  • Eat mango anything
  • Ride in a Tuk Tuk
  • Enjoy food from a personal Thai chef
  • Making a leaf hat with a huge banana leaf
  • Volunteer in the schools
  • Posing for pictures again and again

These are just some of the things to do in Thailand with kids!

8 Habits of Highly Successful Women

Successful women are impressive and we want to know their secrets. Some women wear their power like a badge where others exude a quiet confidence. Here are eight habits of highly successful women that any woman can emulate.

8 Habits of Highly Successful Women

1. They value education and continue learning.

A successful woman understands that education is important and she pursues it. Whether it is formal or informal—successful women are always increasing their learning.

Head chef and owner of Prune restaurant in New York City, Gabrielle Hamilton was the only woman to garner a 2017 James Beard nomination (the Oscars of food awards) in the category of national Outstanding Chef. Hamilton began with an MFA in creative writing and then pursued a career in catering, opened her own restaurant and even wrote an award-winning memoir Blood, Bones, and Butter. Without actually attending culinary school, Gabrielle Hamilton has won acclaim from some of the country’s best chefs with her self-taught cooking style.

Margaret Atwood was 46 years old when she wrote The Handmaid’s Tale in 1985, a best-selling novel and now a Hulu original series that just won a Golden Globe award. Atwood also wrote Alias Grace in 1996 which recently became a Netflix mini-series. Today at nearly 80 years old, Atwood helped write and produce both of these adaptations of her novels for TV.  In her lifetime, Margaret Atwood has written 14 novels, several short stories, over a dozen poetry collections, and she even invented the LongPen–a remote signing device that uses a robotic hand. This sister’s not stopping anytime soon.

2. Successful women are articulate.

Successful women emit confidence and maybe that’s because they have learned to be articulate. They always know what to say and when to say it. A girl boss can command a courtroom, a business meeting, or a podcast because she has a handbag full of verbiage and she knows how to use it.

Sheryl Sandberg is the COO of Facebook and one of the nation’s most influential female executives. She led Facebook in skyrocketing revenues and previously spent six years as a Google vice president. Not only is Sandberg a business powerhouse, but she is a huge supporter of women’s empowerment too. She’s written two books focused on the subject and even founded a non-profit organization called Lean In to help women everywhere realize their potential. Sandberg has dazzled many audiences with her articulation and her TED talks are some of the most influential ever given.

3. They persevere.

Successful women don’t get to the top by stopping and giving up; they keep climbing. Perseverance is one key to success and if anyone knows about that, it’s mega-author J.K. Rowling. When she wrote the first novel in the Harry Potter series, she was a single mom living close to poverty. Now over 400 million copies later, an entire Universal Studios replication of the magical world she created, and several blockbuster films later, J.K. Rowling is a multi-millionaire and one of the most influential women in the world.

4. Successful women get stuff done.

Even when the job is hard or not ideal, successful women know how to step in and take care of business.

Michelle Obama has been the epitome of poise and leadership since her husband’s first term as the president of the United States of America in 2009 to today. While her husband was in office, Michelle Obama brought childhood obesity to the forefront and launched the Let’s Move! initiative to encourage kids to get eat healthy and exercise. During Obama’s second term in office, Michelle formed the Reach Higher movement to inspire young people to pursue higher education. As a Harvard Law School graduate and former corporate and public service lawyer, Michelle Obama made a difference.

5. She’s not afraid of hard work.

Being successful doesn’t come easy. You gotta work to get paid and success only comes to those who know how to work hard.

Arianna Huffington is a Greek American and founder of The Huffington Post. She was a co-host for BBC and has written a number of books. Her entire life has been spent working in politics and media and in 2005 she co-founded The Huffington Post, working to bring America news, satire, and opinions on everything from politics to entertainment to women’s interests. In 2011 AOL acquired The Huffington Post for $315 million and made Arianna Huffington editor-in-chief. She has been listed by Forbes as one of the world’s most powerful working women.

6. Successful women share their light and give back.

The mark of a truly successful woman is that she gives back. She shares her talents and strengths to help lift others and society. She gives encouragement, service, and even money to better the situations of those around her.

Melinda Gates isn’t just one of the wealthiest women in the world (Bill and Melinda Gates have a net worth of $85.7 billion), but she is also an avid philanthropist and advocate for global health and equality, especially among girls and women. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation gives food to the hungry, vaccinations to the impoverished, and educational opportunities to people all over the world.

7. They pursue what excites them.

A woman who realizes her talents and dares to pursue them is already a success.

Oprah Winfrey was born in rural Mississippi to poverty and a teenage single mother. She was later raised in an inner-city neighborhood where she was molested as a child and became pregnant at 14 years old. When her infant son died, Winfrey went to live with the man she considers her father in Tennessee. She got a job as a co-anchor on the local news when she was only 19 and she was good at her job and that was exciting. After working her way up to daytime talk show host, the entire world is now on a first name basis with Oprah. After a hugely successful career, Oprah keeps pursuing what excites her, starring in films like A Wrinkle in Time and starting her OWN network.

8. A successful woman defies cultural or gender norms and transcends them.

A successful woman doesn’t let society tell her what she can and can’t do.

Indra Krishnamurthy Nooyi is an Indian American business executive and the CEO of PepsiCo—the second largest beverage and food company in the world. Nooyi has an impressive resume of Yale School of Management and elite management positions at other large companies. She transcends cultural and gender stereotypes and is a powerful leader on her own merit.

For every women listed here who is in the spotlight for her success, there are hundreds more successful women in the world doing incredible things every day. Mothers, teachers, grandmothers, lawyers, entrepreneurs…women who have learned to make these habits their own. Harness these traits and you’re a force to be reckoned with.

8 Ways To Heal Your Family with Turmeric…the New Miracle Spice

Miracle Spice Turmeric

You’ve probably heard tidbits, if not waves about the new miracle spice that claims to have unbelievable healing powers.  It’s actually not all that new.  What’s all the buzz about Turmeric, the spice used in Indian curry?  Well, for 4,000 years, Turmeric (aka Curcumin) has been used in Eastern medicine to treat inflammation (think arthritis), to fight infection, treat digestive problems, and cure skin diseases (adios, acne!).  Many herbalists and holistic practitioners even claim that Turmeric has powerful cancer-fighting properties.

So is there anything to it?   You’ll have to try it and decide for yourself.  *(Consult your doctor before adding any supplement, turmeric included especially if you are currently on any medications.)

Here are 8 ways you can use Turmeric to help heal your family and get an added boost of superfood powers!

Turmeric 1

1. Whole root or ground powder?

Turmeric comes in two forms: whole root or ground spice powder.  You can find whole root turmeric in health food stores and grocery stores (it looks kinda like ginger).  Peel off the skin with a spoon or peeler and then grate the root to use in soups, dressings, smoothies, etc.  If using the powdered version, buy organic turmeric spice, free of chemicals, preservatives, and additives.

Turmeric 4

2. Should I take the pill?

Many people are using turmeric capsules as a daily supplement.  Although in capsule form, you may be missing out on the full potential turmeric has to offer as opposed to cooking with it.  Skip the supplement.  The active agents in turmeric are fat soluble, meaning that they require a fat source (like coconut and cooking oil) to effectively absorb nutrients¹.  Sooo…the best way to get your turmeric miracle agents is through cooking.  Yum!

3. Turmeric + Black Pepper=POW!

To increase the POWer of turmeric, add a little black pepper to it.  Turmeric and black pepper are like the ultimate power couple…the Brangelina of spices if you will.  Curcumin (the active agent in turmeric) is a powerful anti-inflammatory and black pepper contains piperine, which helps reduce pain².  When cooking veggies, start with a little coconut oil in a pan and add a turmeric and a pinch of black pepper until hot.  Then add your veggies and saute to perfection!

4. Drink “Golden Milk.”

Turmeric 2

Golden Milk is an ancient Ayurvedic drink made with turmeric and milk.  It’s creamy, satisfying, and good for you!  In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of almond milk, 1/4 tsp turmeric, 1 tsp coconut oil, a dash of black pepper, a tsp of vanilla, then honey or agave to taste.  Add a dash of cinnamon on top–delish!  See more yummy Golden Milk recipes here!

5. Add turmeric to your smoothies.

An easy way to get a little turmeric is by adding it to your smoothies.  Make sure to combine your turmeric with a little coconut oil before adding it to your smoothie, preferably heated together.  Try our favorite smoothie recipes or specific turmeric smoothie recipes found on Pinterest.

Turmeric 5

6. Shake it up in your dressings and marinades.

Turmeric is a perfect addition to salad dressings and meat marinades.  Add 1/4 to 1/2 tsp of turmeric to any of these delicious homemade vinaigrettes for a delicious and miraculous meal.

Turmeric 9

7. Make a turmeric spice rub for meats.

If you’re not a huge fan of curry, you can get your turmeric on top of a big, fat, juicy steak.  Try this copycat Texas Roadhouse steak rub or any of these spice rubs for chicken, steak, or seafood.

8. Try a turmeric facial mask.

Have you seen those crazy yellow face masks floating around your Facebook or Pinterest feed?  However silly they seems, people are swearing by turmeric face masks and the acne-fighting, scar-fading power they have.  Hey, I’m willing to try anything once!  Get all sorts of DIY turmeric face masks here!

21 Awesome Tips To Get Your Home Ready To Sell

Whether you’re moving for a job or just ready to upgrade or downsize, selling a house can be a huge undertaking. But you can’t take down a giant submarine sandwich in one bite; similarly, it’s impossible to get a house ready to sell in a day. It takes lots of small steps to get your home ready to put on the market. Use these helpful tips to get your casa in tip-top shape so that you can get top dollar when it sells.

21 Awesome Tips To Get Your Home Ready To Sell

Before the Showing

1. Refresh your curb appeal.

The front of your home is the first thing potential buyers will see. Put your best foot forward and make a good impression by refreshing a few areas. Trim overgrown trees or shrubs; plant flowers in the flower beds or a porch planter. Repaint the front door, trim, or shutters for a fresh look. Here are some ideas you might like:

15 Beautiful Front and Back Porch Styling Ideas

Home Updates on a Budget

2. Have the exterior of your home repainted.

You’d be amazed at how a new coat of paint can completely transform the look of your home. Consider it an investment. Last year, the average amount it cost to paint the exterior of a house was between $3,000 to $4,000. That’s a small cost that can add big value onto your home.

3. Make a room-by-room checklist of everything that needs to be fixed.

The amount of to-dos in getting your home ready to sell can overwhelm you quickly if you don’t have a plan. Take the time to walk through your house, room by room, keeping a list of things that need repaired in that room. Working on one room at a time can ensure a thorough job.

4. Tackle those paint touch-ups.

Most homes really take a beating over the years, especially when it comes to paint getting chipped off the walls. Paint touch ups are something that every homeowner must do, but how do you match your existing color up precisely?

Use a razor blade to shave a small 1-inch portion of paint off the surface of your sheetrock. Place it in a bag labeled with the room you took the sample from and take it into a paint associate at your local hardware store. When you get home, apply the paint with a brush or roller and wait for the paint to dry entirely to determine if it was an accurate match.

5. Repair any and all door knobs or handles.

A lot of times, they just need a few screws tightened or a little WD-40, but make sure those door knobs and handles are all working properly.

6. Deep cleaning: take it one room at a time.

Selling a house is probably the best opportunity to declutter. Again, tackling the job one room at a time is probably the easiest. Have three containers ready with you: one for trash, one for donating, and one for items you’ll take with you to the new house but don’t immediately need. This way, half of the packing will already be done before you even sell your home.

7. Update kitchen and bathroom hardware.

Another inexpensive update that can make a huge difference is changing out the existing hardware on your kitchen and bathroom cabinets and drawers with new ones.

8. Wax all wood floors or consider refinishing them.

Over time, your once smooth and shiny hardwood floors become scratched and dull. Give them a little TLC by waxing them or even refinishing them. Before hiring a professional to refinish your hardwood floors, check out this tutorial on how to refinish wood floors. It will save you money and isn’t as hard as most people think.

9. Re-calk the kitchen and bathroom.

After years and years of use, the calk in your kitchen and bathrooms can start to look cracked and dirty. Re-calking is a very simple task and can refresh your kitchen or bathroom counters.

10. Spruce up tile grout.

Similarly, tile grout gets dingy due to natural wear and tear on your home. There are several ways to clean your grout, but it might require a bit of grunt-work. For natural cleaners, vinegar works wonders! Lemon juice is also a good cleaner. You can check out the best ways to clean grout on Pinterest.

11.  If you have any crazy-colored walls, repaint them.

You may like purple or pink or bright green on the walls of your home, but that doesn’t mean potential buyers do. In fact, odd-colored paint can turn a homebuyer off real quick. If you’ve got something like that, take an afternoon to repaint it a more neutral tone.

12. Clean the baseboards.

Baseboards are the one finish that ties your whole home together and gives it that polished look. Wipe the dust off them, use a Magic Eraser to clean up any scuffs, and give them a good over-all clean. One fun trick is to use dryer sheets to wipe them down. This keeps the dust from sticking!

13. Revive the lighting in your home.

Dust all light fixtures top to bottom, replace light bulbs, and consider replacing outdated light fixtures with newer ones. We love this DIY barn light that’s easy and cheap to make.

14. Clean windows and pressure wash the exterior.

If it hasn’t been done for a while (or ever) get your windows professionally washed and pressure wash the exterior of your home to give it a shiny new makeover.

15. Have the carpets cleaned.

Carpets hide and harbor a lot of dirt and junk and having them cleaned will make your home look cleaner and more impressive.

{Image courtesy of Unsplash.com}

Ready for Home Showings

16. Un-personalize your home.

Homebuyers don’t want to see your family photos on the wall; they want to envision their own there. Before your home shows, take down all photos and personal decor, including personalized names, etc.

17. Put all toiletries in a convenient box.

People who come through your home will definitely be opening your drawers and cupboards to get an idea of how much storage space your home has. They don’t want to find your personal toiletry items. Go ahead and pack up things you don’t use or need immediately, then store items like toothbrushes, makeup, and feminine products in a convenient box that you can either take with you when your home shows or store in an out-of-the-way place.

18. Clean and organize closets and remove any personal items.

The less you have in your closets when it’s time for home showings, the better.

19. Remove all signs of clutter.

Too much clutter—and that means over-decorating—can make your house look messy and smaller. Try to turn your home into more of a blank canvas by removing clutter and employing a few good home staging tips.

20. Shape up your pantry.

Deep clean your pantry and organize it so that it doesn’t look like the kids just ravaged through it for a snack. The kitchen is the #1 seeing point for a lot home buyers.

21. Mow and maintain the lawn.

Finally, while your home is on the market, make sure to mow and maintain your lawn. That attention to detail is noticed and will serve as one small detail that can elevate your home above others in the area.

Extra Large Pizza Cookie – Make One Today!

Extra Large Pizza Cookie – Make One Today!

We recently moved to a new city and have been introduced to the most heavenly dessert around. It’s an extra large pizza cookie. Made at a local pizza joint in a big pizza pan. Smothered with ice cream it’s what dreams are made out of! Of course it’s pricey so I decided to try my hand at making my own. It was totally easy, I just used my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe, put it in a pizza pan and cooked it up! The kids loved it too! Check out the video below to see just how easy it was!

5 Wellness Goals To Bring You Happiness and Health

*This post is a collaboration with tjmaxx.com to celebrate every woman’s individuality and wellness!

When reflecting on New Year’s resolutions I wanted to make this year, one word that kept coming to mind was “Wellness.”

Wellness is the state of being healthy in body and mind, but it’s also a result of deliberate effort. Wellness is something you have to work at.

5 Wellness Goals To Bring You Happiness and Health

I can’t rely on others to make me happy or healthy; it’s something I have to journey through for myself. So with that in mind, I chose 5 wellness goals to work on and one place to help me tackle them. I love T.J.Maxx stores! It’s my happy place where I go to shop for clothing, beauty essentials, and home decor. Walking into a T.J.Maxx store is like walking into a real life Pinterest board.

And I’ve most recently discovered something just as good: tjmaxx.com! It’s the same happy place to shop for great deals on women’s and men’s fashions, shoes and accessories, beauty products, home decor, and right now some of the most inspiring wellness products!

T.J.Maxx has curated a beautiful collection of women’s activewear, fitness accessories, and home wellness items like blenders, juicers, and cookbooks to inspire you in the New Year! There are so many fun things to shop for and hundreds of new arrivals each week. I love the surprise of finding new and unique items!

Here are my 5 wellness goals and the tjmaxx.com goodies that are helping me achieve them.

1. Eat more fruits and veggies.

There are so many “diets” out there that come and go. Frankly, I’m not a “diet” person. I find that I feel the healthiest and happiest when I eat sensibly and well-balanced. That means toning down on the carbs and upping the fruits and vegetables. It means eating lean proteins and minimizing processed foods. I feel amazing when I eat plenty of fruits and veggies, but sometimes it’s hard to do.

Smoothies are my all-time favorite way to get more fruits, and yes…vegetables! You can literally throw any fruit or vegetable into a blender and get a crazy amount of nutrition! You can also toss celery, kale, or spinach into any smoothie and it doesn’t influence the taste. Or try an orange, carrot, and fresh ginger smoothie which is a yummy combo.

2. Have more home-cooked meals.

Whether it’s me or my husband doing the cooking, it always feels better when we eat at home. We spend less money, eat healthier, and get to spend quality time cooking and eating together.

Grabbing a few new cookbooks every year helps refresh my inspiration to cook. Here are a few inspiring books I just picked up at tjmaxx.com.

3. Increase muscle strength and definition.

I’ve always been a fitness lover and so exercising has been a part of my life since I was a child. That being said, I’ve never felt very strong. One of my fitness goals this year is to increase my muscle strength and even get some definition in my arms, back, and legs.

I’ve really been enjoying the book Strong is the New Beautiful. It’s all about embracing your natural beauty, eating clean, and discovering your inner power. You can find it and other great books at tjmaxx.com!

Again, being happy and healthy is in nobody’s hands but my own. It would be awesome if biceps grew over night, but since they don’t…it’s time to get to work!

And am I the only one that is highly motivated by new workout clothes? I love activewear and Women’s Athleisure is my favorite thing to wear pretty much all day. I mean, check out the back on this fun tank! Anytime I get new workout clothes, I’m like 5 for 5 at the gym.

T.J.Maxx.com has some dang cute workout clothes and fun Active Accessories to get you fired up about getting fit!

Find everything you’re looking for in the tjmaxx.com Maxx You section.

4. Be more present.

Life is so loud and busy with so many distractions. One thing I’m trying desperately to do in my life is be more present. That means taking a chance to savor each moment. Whether it’s at home when my kids are eating breakfast or at one of their basketball games, I want to be there physically and mentally.

For me, that means knowing when to put my phone down and give my complete attention. The number one comment I get from older parents that I meet is that, “Kids grow up so fast.” One minute they’re little, the next they are driving and I don’t want to miss anything in-between.

I need a daily reminder to stop and treasure the little moments and this sign I found at tmaxx.com is perfect for that! Every time I see it, it reminds me to stop, breathe, and embrace the moment.

And as a side note, aren’t these kitty cat bowls THEE cutest thing you’ve ever seen? I spotted them on tjmaxx.com and instantly had to make them mine! The kids love them!

Like I said, T.J.Maxx is the best! (You cans search for your perfect bowls here.)

5. Allocate 15 minutes of quiet “me” time every day.

Daily life in my house is loud, with kids running back and forth, dribbling basketballs in the house and all the noises that busy families make. It’s vital to my mental health to sneak away at least 15 kid-free minutes of “me” time. So whether it’s to steal away a few minutes to read, take an uninterrupted bath, or paint my nails, I’m going to make it happen at the same time every day.

Like many women, inspiration is a big part of my life. When I feel inspired, I feel motivated and I love the new Wellness items at tjmaxx.com that inspire me to live healthy and be happy.

When you shop tjmaxx.com, you’ll find hundreds of new arrivals each week which makes for incredible treasure hunting! You also get free & easy in-store returns to thousands of store locations, and orders of $89+ ship free.

Prefer to shop at your local T.J.Maxx store? I totally get it! (#RetailTherapy) Don’t worry, they’ve got your wellness covered too. In fact, I was just in my local T.J.Maxx store and they have so many fun new home and personal wellness items right now! Check out locations and store hours near you.

Make wellness a part of your life this year because you deserve it!
