DIY Cheap Custom Barn Lights

diy cheap custom barn lights

Lighting makes a space!

Lighting makes a space and it always seems to be the budget breaker as well. In decorating my son’s room I had my heart set on some beautiful, kelly green barn lights from an online store; they were also ridiculously overpriced at $340 a piece. I was determined to get the look for less.

Here’s how I did it.

I found some outdoor lights at Lowes for $40 a piece. The lights were meant to be hard-wired – but I didn’t want permanent wires ran to these lights.  So I opted to convert them to plug-in lights after talking with an electrician. Before painting, I drilled a hole in the bottom of the lights using a metal drill bit. diy cheap custom barn lights (1)  diy cheap custom barn lights (2) Instead of painting the entire light green, I wanted to preserve some of the aluminum color. I used painters tape to mask off the areas I didn’t want painted. diy cheap custom barn lights (3) diy cheap custom barn lights (4) With the paint dry – I converted it to a plug-in light. I purchased a wire kit and connected it to the hard-wired wires found in the light. diy cheap custom barn lights (5) diy cheap custom barn lights (6) diy cheap custom barn lights (7)

Hanging the light

I used the bracket that came with the light and modified it slightly so it would hang on my wall and in no time I had two lights hanging above my sons’ beds. diy cheap custom barn lights (11) diy cheap custom barn lights (10) diy cheap custom barn lights (9)

These DIY cheap custom barn lights  were just what I was hoping for and they didn’t break the bank. No need to pay for high-end, create your own inexpensive barn lights! Kara Pothier

We have a super fun collection of 4th of July printables that will take your entertaining up a notch while still keeping this holiday easy breezy.

4th of July Printable set includes the following:

 – ‘USA’ flag banner
– Water bottle labels (5 unique designs)
– Tin can labels (4 unique designs)
– ‘From Sea to Shining Sea’ 8×10 sign
– ‘America – est 1776’ 8×10 sign
– USA ‘home’ 8×10 sign
– Cupcake toppers (5 unique designs)
-Food label tents
-Scavenger Hunt Cards
-‘You Rock’ Rock Pops Tag (2 unique designs)
-Sparkler tags (4 unique designs)

Easy to print PDF makes this a super simple project!

Scroll down to the bottom to see how to get this adorable set.

My favorite printable in this collection is definitely the scavenger hunt cards. This is a fun way to keep the kids entertained. Maybe the winner gets the first slice of watermelon. 😉 We can’t wait to play this at our 4th of July celebration this year.

I don’t know about you, but my house definitely doesn’t have enough patriotic decor. This collection includes THREE printable 8×10 signs, perfect for sitting on a shelf for home decor or add it to a food table for an extra special patriotic flare.

My kids LOVE playing with tin cans and it’s so easy and a great way to reuse cans, too! We’ve included 4 unique designs that take like 2 seconds to attach to a can for the perfect 4th of July game. So fun!

Oh, sparklers – our 4th of July revolves around these things. These cute printables are a great way to give each kid a set of sparklers.

Cupcake toppers or in this case veggie cup toppers, are a quick and easy way to dress up a single serving. I simply cut a few straws in half and hot glued (or you could use regular tape) to attach the straw to the circle. So easy!

This USA banner is perfect for all the patriotic holidays. I’m going to keep it handy for them all.

Food tents are a great way to label everything from snacks to drinks to desserts.

Pop rocks is definitely the official candy for 4th of July and what a fun favor for the kids than these adorable pop rocks with fold over tags. So fun!

And finally, water bottle labels are a super easy way to dress up plain water bottles. And with 5 unique styles, it will make it easy to remember which one is yours when there’s several water bottles sitting around on the table.

These 4th of July printables are SO EASY to print, cut, and assemble. You will have no trouble making this a special day with little effort.

And, lucky for you, this set is on sale in the shop. Click Here to find it in the shop. OR here’s a secret….it’s discounted even more for our newsletter subscribers! 9 Walmart Wardrobe Additions That You MUST Snag!

This post is sponsored by Walmart and RewardStyle.

It’s official. Walmart has become my Summer wardrobe go-to. For months now, I have been watching all the new styles hit the virtual shelves and I couldn’t be more impressed with the style and quality of the items I have purchased. Walmart is on style point and the prices are always better than anywhere! I also love that they have free, 2-day shipping for order over $35! I never have to leave my house!

I wanted to share a few items that I have personally snagged and adore! From the butter soft loungewear I’ve been in WAY too much to the high waisted denim crops that tuck in all the “stuff” just perfectly! You NEED to try these things! If you ever want to see these (and other items) via try on, you’ll find a lot in our SAVE Facebook group HERE.

Button Up Tee: I’m a nursing mama, so button up tops are essential. I love that this one has a classic, preppy look and a flattering fit.

High top sneakers: I actually got these in the Fall, and am still wearing them. They’ve been sold out several times, but are in stock now and a GREAT purchase. They go with SO many outfits.

High waist wide leg denim crops: These are a probably my best purchased of the season. I LOVE a high waisted jean/pant because they are flattering on my post baby belly. They tuck in everything just right, while still remaining comfortable. These are so cute paired with a boxy tee.Secret Treasures PJ Set: I purchased these PJ’s (in the almost sold out tie-dye) last month and they are the BEST. I wear them to bed and to lounge around the house because they’re so light weight, airy and comfy! They feel like a much more expensive pair I own, but at an incredible price! Lots of different styles and colors, but I’m loving this leopard combo!

Burn out crew neck tee: I’m a basic kind of gal when it comes to my clothes, and this crew neck tee is one I keep coming back to. I own it in grey and it has a perfect oversized fit you’ll wear again and again. Now, the hard part is choosing just ONE color. Guess you better get a few!

Classic Tote: This is just an essential foundation piece for ANY wardrobe. Its a bestseller for a reason! Grab this tote quick!

Boyfriend Distressed Capris: Capris/crops are a style that spans generations. If you’re tired up the super skinny style, try these. They’re a bit less fitted, while still remaining figure flattering. These are a great pick!

HOORAY tee: This is no ordinary graphic tee. It, and others in the same line, have taken the basic graphic tee up a notch with the letters being embroidered. So darling and so easy to wear this Summer. Throw this tee on with some denim shorts and GO!

Tiered Dress: Another personal favorite that I find on repeat already this Summer. It’s a casual sundress, with a flattering fit. The top bodice is more form fitting, but the bottom tiered section flares out just right to give you a little looseness. I want this in other colors I love the fit so much! Easy and breezy in the steamy temperatures!

Happy Shopping and let me know if you have any questions!

Online Illustration Tutorial Resources For Tweens

There are tons of online art resources unless you need tutorials for a tween artist at an intermediate skill level. There are a lot of beginner resources, and excellent (expensive) advanced courses, but not many in the middle. If you’re looking for illustration tutorials for tweens, here are a few that are great for kids who are ready for slightly more difficult content. Plus, I have a couple of bonus beginner resources at the bottom.

YouTube Intermediate Tutorials:

YouTube has great free and some paid classes. For intermediate tween artists, there are not a lot of options that have both a breadth of work published that are appropriate for younger audiences (aka: no cursing, appropriate subjects for children, etc…). My kids have pretty much trolled every artist on YouTube. Their favorite is DrawItToo. His instructions are easy to follow, he’s likable, and as a parent, I like that he does not swear (we’ve only noticed one minor curse word in all of his videos). He draws lots of superheroes and other iconic figures. Some of the art is on the simple side, but most of it is more complex and is perfect for 10 to 14-year olds who have already logged a lot of hours on the beginner tutorials.
Youtube Illustration Tutorials for tweens

Outschool:

Outschool is an online resource for small group-classes for kids. Classes have different costs, teachers, and/or class times. Each class has an age-range requirement and caps the number of students who can register. As you can imagine, these classes have become a lot more popular this year so it’s best to sign up well in advance. The classes are taught over an online platform (like Zoom). Some of the teachers have amazing resumes! They specifically have illustration tutorials for tweens, and you can see a list of the art classes {here}.

For our family, we needed teachers who did less talking and more drawing. So it is beneficial to scour the reviews and even reach out to the teacher to ask them about their teaching style. My kids wanted just to get right to the artwork and skip the chit-chat and art “show and tell”, so that was something I realized we needed to look for in the class offerings.

One wonderful side benefit is the exposure to other young artists who excel in their craft. On the flip-side, consider prepping your kiddo to be secure in their talent and skill. Because these young artists come from all over the country, your child may be shocked to realize they are not The Ultimate Best artist their age that ever existed. Besides, everyone has different tastes and styles, and that’s what makes the world interesting! There are a lot of talented artists, and there is room for everyone. The last thing we want is for kids to get discouraged.

Insider tips:
  • Outschool Guide– get all the details, like “check materials requirements in advance.” Apparently, this gets overlooked a lot!
  • A referral program – get a $20 credit!
  • The parent FAQ (frequently asked questions).
Outschool is an art resources for kids

Art Eye Deer:

This is a program we have not yet tried out, but there is a free trial, so it’s definitely worth checking out their art resources for kids! https://arteyedeer.com.au/

Hire a Professional:

We have hired a professional illustrator for virtual art classes. We worked with Russ Cox, who was amazing. A-maz-ing. I literally stalked him on Twitter like a nut-case and then asked him about teaching. Fortunately, he didn’t block me, and he had a lot of teaching experience! A professional can not only teach amazing fundamental skills, but they can also give your kiddo very specific feedback and instruction. They can help fill in gaps in a child’s skill, and help grow areas where they are already proficient. Before you hire someone, here are some questions you could consider asking:
  • How long are the classes? How often do you meet? What is the cost per class? Is there a sliding scale if more than one sibling attends?
  • Have you taught kids online before? (Tell me about your experience.)
  • Where did you learn to draw? (Resume.)
  • What is the format of your classes? (Do they do a lot of talking/teaching or active drawing? Do they cover fundamentals? Or do they focus on fun stuff? (My kids preferred fun-stuff!) )

The interesting thing is, with skype/zoom, you’d be surprised at what phenomenal illustrators you might be able to nab for classes. Just remember, not all amazing artists are amazing teachers. So ask questions!

Illustration Tutorials for tweens

Basic Art Tutorials for Kids:

Here are some art resources for beginning artists. We have used and love both of these websites.
  • www.Kidlit.tv has a whole section of illustration tutorials called Ready, Set, Draw. Every tutorial is with a professional children’s literature illustrator. It’s super fun to learn to draw characters from current books straight from the illustrator who designed them. All free!
  •  Art for Kids Hub has a website and a YouTube channel. Art for Kids Hub has a lot of free tutorials, and there is also a paid level. The instructor is highly engaging and doesn’t do a lot of chatter, so it is perfect for kids who want to get straight to the art. We had the paid level for about a year and found it valuable.

Creating Backyard Summer Fun with Zulily

*** This post is sponsored by Zulily and ShopStyle. All opinions are my own.***

Popsicles. Swimsuits. Camping. Just a few things that are quintessential Summer. This Summer looks a little different than some, but whether you’re hanging out at home or building a wonderland of fun in your back yard, Zulily has all the tools you need to make a Summer to never forget!

I love shopping Zulily because they have such a wide selection of everything for your wardrobe, your kids, and your home. Not to mention their prices will rival anyone’s. Each deal only lasts a limited time, and products change daily. This means, if you see something you can’t live without, grab it fast because it could be gone tomorrow! I love the variety and the deals I can snag!

I rounded up a few must haves to make Summer even more fun. So many good things at great prices!

Adidas Rainbow romper: Every kid needs a really cute, sporty outfit. This one checks all the boxes. Stylish, and super comfy so they can keep up with all those backyard games.

Waterpark Arcade Game: Did you know pools, trampolines and water toys are getting more difficult to find! This waterpark arcade game is a fun way to keep littles busy! Great price on this interactive toy!

Hanging tent : Is this not the coolest tent you have ever seen? It holds up to 500 lbs so even mom could hide in here with a good book! 😉

Adidas bball set: My boys LIVE in these types of sets during the Summer. Cute enough to wear “out,” comfy enough to stay home.
My son always says these type of outfit sets help him to “run fast”!

Leopard Swimmer: Is this swimsuit heaven? I can’t even with this fancy Nancy suit! Such sass. Now the only question is, does this come in adult sizes??

Glow in the Dark Blanket: WE’ve already camped out on the trampoline a couple nights this Summer. Those cool nights require some warm blankets. This fun blanket glows in the dark! It comes in many different styles and the price is right!

Brain Quest Books: Maybe your kid doesn’t equate Summer learning to Summer fun, but my kids love these learning books! I like that they’re learning more and preparing for the Fall!

We Will Rock you tank: TONS of funny graphic tees and tanks on Zulily, but this one made me laugh out loud. Perfect for a patriotic holiday and beyond.

Ant Farm : There’s no better way to experience science than to do a hands on science experiment. These ant farms are a great way to study science up close and personal!

Bright scrunchis : My tweens LOVE these! Hot Summer days means our hair is UP a lot more than normal. These scrunchies do the job without leaving a huge bump in your hair!

Fairy potions Kit: How fun is this “crafty” set? I remember doing something similar as a kid, but now you have the kit and supplies to make it even better! Create fun, sparkly, colorful fairy potions!

Boutique outfits: I’m a sucker for a good boutique outfit, but not crazy about the prices. These are boutique quality, but a lot more affordable! Such a fun idea for a picnic or even family photos!

Happy Summer and have fun shopping!

What Research Says about Touching Your Kids

Some families are naturally touchy-feely and don’t mind sharing hugs and physical touch while others prefer to show their love in more non-physical ways, like spending time together or verbal affirmations. But there is a huge body of research that says physical touch is more important than we think.

What Research Says about Touching Your Kids

1. It is a vital part of infant growth and development.

It’s not surprising that infants thrive on sensory experiences, the main one being touch. If you’ve seen a cat with a new litter of kittens or baby birds nestled up next to their mama, you’ll observe how instinctive it is for creatures just entering life to get close to one another.

Every living thing is born with the need for physical contact.

According to the NCBI US National Library of Medicine, developmental delay is often seen in children who do not receive adequate or appropriate sensory stimulation, specifically touch. This study states that orphaned infants in the bleakest of conditions in Eastern Europe–babies who rarely get held–exhibited impaired growth and cognitive development, as well as susceptibility to infection.

{Above: Holding infants on our trip to an orphanage in Guatemala.}

Research suggests that these orphans aren’t suffering from maternal deprivation, but from sensory deprivation. They need to be held, snuggled, touched. That’s why skin-to-skin contact is encouraged immediately after giving birth.

Bottom line: Significant evidence shows that touching your kids is vital to their physical growth and cognitive development.

2. Your brain releases certain chemicals when you experience physical touch.

A fascinating study reported by The New York Times says that our brains actually release certain chemicals when triggered by physical touch, and others are released in the absence of touch. The study was conducted on premature infants; a group of whom were left alone in their incubators and a group of whom were massaged for 15 minutes, three times a day.

The babies who were massaged gained weight 47% faster than the ones who were left alone. They became more active and more responsive, even getting discharged from the hospital an average of six days earlier.

And it’s not just babies whose brains respond to skin-to-skin contact. Psychology Today shares a 2013 study on the importance of human touch. Researchers in the UK found that “loving touch, characterized by a slow caress or gentle stroking plays a big part in sustaining a healthy sense of self.”

Bottom line: Make touching your kids and spouse a point daily. Release those feel-good endorphins with a hug, arm around the shoulder, or simple rub on the back.

3. Touch is how we share compassion.

Have you ever experienced a bad day that was completely transformed by a hug? Or have you had a sick child who only wants to be held? It’s because even the smallest gesture of physical touch can make us feel better.

The Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley has found, after years of examining the science of touch, that physical connections are far more important than we realize. It is a powerful language of compassion.

“To touch can be to give life,” said Michelangelo.

Interestingly enough, we don’t touch nearly as much in the United States as in other parts of the world. In the 1960s, notable psychologist Sidney Jourard conducted a study where he visited various parts of the world and observed conversations between two friends over lunch. What he found was fascinating:

  • In England, the two friends touched zero times.
  • In the United States, the average was twice.
  • But in France, it was common for two friends to touch up to 110 times.
  • In Puerto Rico, friends touched 180 times just during lunch together!

Bottom, bottom line: Don’t be afraid to get more touchy-feely. Physical touch is more important than you know. Touching your kids can boost their development; hugging a friend can show compassion. And snuggling up to someone you love doesn’t just feel good, it’s good for you too.
