Weird Things You Can Put on Your Face in the Name of Beauty

If you’ve thought you’ve heard it all when it comes to beauty, think again. There are a lot of weird things out there you can put on your face in the name of beauty and some actually might be worth a try. We’ll score them on the crazy scale (1 being not so far out there and 10 being completely loco) and then let you decide!

Weird Things You Can Put on Your Face in the Name of Beauty

1. Mashed up food

Crazy Scale Score: 3

If taking a handful from your compost pile and rubbing it on your face sounds gross, don’t worry, this is nothing like that. The hot trend in skin care right now are Vegan beauty masks. Places like Lush and The Body Shop have numerous all-natural skin creams and exfoliating masks made of fresh ingredients like seaweed, ground beans, and mint.

If you’re still a little reluctant about smearing ground rice, garlic, and lemon peel, that’s understandable. It does sound a but like dumpster diving. But rest assured, these “mashed up food” masks are actually fresh, soothing, and organically great for your skin!

2. Hemorrhoid cream

Crazy Scale Score: 9

Hemorrhoids are no laughing matter, but it is comical that a growing number of people are in fact applying creams meant for the opposite end of the body to their face.

Why? Because the phenylephrine HCI in hemorrhoidal cream can in fact reduce the puffiness under your eyes. And if you find one containing caffeine (a vasoconstrictor) and peptides, you can smooth lines and wrinkles as well.

3. Pepto-Bismal

Crazy Scale Score: 5

A bright pink Pepto-Bismol face mask doesn’t sound too bad, that is if you can stand the smell of that tummy soothing medicine. You either love it or hate it—not many fence-sitters on the Pepto-Bismol fence.

But if you’re ready to fight pimples, YouTubers are swearing this stuff is a miracle worker. Pepto-Bismol contains a salicylic acid derivative that can fight pimples. So now along with putting the kibosh on diarrhea and indigestion, a dose of Pepto just may zap those zits too.

4. Vagisil

Crazy Scale Score: 9

Foundation primer or lady-part anti-itch cream? One can hardly tell nowadays with Millenials using Vagisil as a pre-makeup pillow. Again, YouTube is part to blame. You can find out how to use feminine anti-itch creams as a makeup primer—a base that gives your foundation a much smoother appearance.

How does it work? Mineral oil and glycol in products like Vagisil offer hydration that allows your face to soak up some much-needed hydration. But be careful, it also contains allergens like lanolin that could cause a facial reaction.

5. Bird’s nest face cream

Crazy Scale Score: 10

Asian beauty is on the brink of igniting and bird’s nest skin creams are starting to pop up everywhere. And yes, they are literally made from a swiftlet bird’s nest containing solidified saliva that has been deemed as nutritious for body and skin.

If solidified bird saliva doesn’t scare you away, the fact that the swiftlet population is being threatened might. Nests are being taken away and made into soups and beauty creams before many birds have a chance to lay their eggs. Still, bird’s nest face cream has been touted as an incredible anti-aging and nutri-collagen product.

6. Straight up mayo

Crazy Scale Score: 2

Now that we’ve talked hemorrhoid eye cream and bird’s nest face creams, mayonnaise seems very “girl-next-door” and straight up amicable when it comes to weird stuff you can put on your face.

Actually, mayonnaise has quite a few beauty benefits. Made mostly of egg and vinegar, mayo preserves moisture in dry cells and leaves you with baby-soft skin. You can even spread mayonnaise on a sunburn to calm the burn and relieve the pain. Spread 1 tablespoon of mayo on your face, leave it on for 10 minutes, then wash with warm water for incredibly hydrated skin.

Although my motto when it comes to beauty is, I’ll try anything once—I’m having a hard time with a few on this list. Sticking to products meant for the face seems like a safer bet, but I guess Cleopatra didn’t get her beauty by playing it safe. {She used apple cider vinegar as a face rinse!}
