Are you looking for an online reading tool? If your kiddo isn’t making the recommended reading benchmarks, consider utilizing a reading resource. Several of our mom-friends were buzzing about the “10-Minute Tutor”. They raved about how well it worked for a range of reading struggles. So, we delved into the “10-Minute Tutor” and liked it. A lot! So we reached out to them. And now we’re very pleased to be able to share this program with you!
This reading program is perfect for homeschooling parents, or for parents who want to supplement what their kids learn in school. This tool is most useful for:
- Children falling behind in reading benchmarks at school
- Reluctant readers
- Homeschooling families who are looking for reading curriculum
In just 10-minutes a day, this tool will teach your child to read. This is such a great way to support your child’s reading and writing from home!
How It Works
When you first log in, you’ll begin with a reading assessment for your child. Assess your child as you go and if it’s too basic you can speed ahead so they’re feeling the appropriate amount of difficulty.
I was afraid I’d have to keep track of all the emails to find the links to each lesson, but they’re categorized on the side of the website. This is perfect for busy parents. Simply log into the program and pick up where you left off. It’s organized for you.
More than one child at home with reading difficulties? You’re in luck! Set up immediate family members with an account at no additional charge. How fantastic is that?!
This reading system has several different reading levels, with lessons within each level. Each lesson includes:
- A video, for visual and auditory instruction
- Written instructions
- Worksheets
- Supplementary information
Here’s a screenshot of what the program looks like:
The program takes about 12 months to complete. Of course, it depends on how strictly you adhere to the daily schedule. But, there’s no punishment (like you won’t be kicked out of the program) if your kiddo falls behind. Some schools allow children to work via the 10-minute tutor at public school. So, instead of using this curriculum as extra reading homework, this can be completed during classroom time. Talk to your school and teacher to find out your options.
Use this program on multiple platforms, including: desktop, tablet or cell phone.
Why Reading is Critical to Learn before 4th Grade
For the first few years of school, reading is heavily pushed. This is because after the 3rd grade, kids use their reading skills to learn other subjects: language arts, history, math, science, etc. Reading is a foundation, must-have internal tool. If kids reach the 4th grade without sufficient reading and comprehension skills, all their school work will begin to suffer.
Child Cooperation
We, as parents, get really excited about helping our children learn to read. But sometimes kids aren’t as thrilled. Here are tips from 10-Minute Reading Tutor that will help you implement any new routines.
– Child Involvement: They’re more motivated to create and stick to goals.
– Routines: Let your child know what to expect each day (no surprises).
– Mental Preparation: Prepare for three weeks of push-back. It takes about three weeks to get into a new routine.
– Calendar: Plan your child’s schedule so that learning to read gets the support it needs over other activities.
Australian Reading Tool
The creators of the 10-Minute Reading Tutor are from Australia. So while you get the benefit of the lovely Australian accent, you also get “z” pronounced like “zed”, rather than pronounced “zee”. However, after scouring the website for English spellings (with the extra “u’s” and whatnot), I found this was consistently in the American-English form.
