The Secret to Happiness That Only Took 30 Years To Learn

The word “happiness” has only one simple definition in the dictionary—the state of being happy—but over 40 different synonyms: joy, contentedness, bliss, optimism, and good humor to name a few. This goes to show that we humans all experience happiness differently and the sources of our happiness are significantly diversified. One might experience the happiness a child brings while another might find a similar joy in a beloved pet. You might find happiness in traveling the world while your counterpart finds joy within the walls of home. The fact remains that most of us travelers on this planet are searching for happiness—the long-lasting kind.

Everyone from writers, to political figures, to celebrities have their secrets to happiness. Yours will be different from theirs; mine will be different from yours. But at the heart of man’s search for joy lies one universal bullet point that many of us are missing: being truly happy for others. It only took me over three decades to learn this, but having genuine happiness for others has allowed me to tap into a simpler, deeper happiness for myself.

The Secret to Happiness: Being Truly Happy for Others

A few years ago, a friend of mine posted some very exciting news to her Facebook page: she’d finished her manuscript and had an offer to get her first book published! It was the dream every writer waits years, sometimes decades to come true. I plastered a smile on my face as I pushed the “like” button and added a comment with a string of emojis—whoop-whoop, smiley face with heart eyes, hands clapping, etc.  But I felt anything but thumbs-up inside.

Her good fortune left me with a dark feeling I couldn’t shake. I imagined her pristinely bound manuscript with 12-point, double-spaced font, and not a red mark in sight. Then I thought of my own manuscript scattered like a skiing accident around the house. One chapter here, a page of notes there…what a yard sale.

The days passed and even as my friend’s news faded, something funky lingered. I was agitated, easily set of by the smallest things. Finally, I stopped to ask myself, What is going on? I began tracing my surliness back to the day of my friend’s announcement and it hit me like a Wile E. Coyote anvil to the head. I was jealous. I couldn’t be happy until I was truly, genuinely happy for my friend and her success.

Learning To Be Happy for Others

The key to happiness isn’t necessarily in our own personal accomplishments and successes. Those things contribute to our happiness, but we can only achieve long-term, homeostasis joy only when we have inner peace. And that can’t happen when we harbor jealously, resentment, or ill-will towards others. Often times the very person keeping us from happiness is ourself. And the people we bottle up negativity towards are our usually closest friends and family.

Think about it. Has the good news of a friend or family member ever spurred the inner critic or judge in your head? How about that friend who:

Is building her dream home?

Just got an amazing promotion or pay raise?

Lost a ton of weight or has really toned up?

Had a stroke of good luck, like winning the lottery or scoring a free vacation?

Is excited about a lifestyle change?

Makes a decision that you don’t necessarily agree with?

In all of these instances, it is our natural instinct to compare, nit-pick, or pass judgement. I can’t believe they’re spending that much money on a home. I would never choose that paint color. A friend’s pay raise might make us feel insecure or defensive about our own paycheck. A stroke of good luck might incite thoughts like, They don’t deserve that. Maybe a new tattoo isn’t up your alley, but there’s no use withholding your friendship or love because someone close to you chooses to get one.

Allowing negative thoughts like these to fester inside only bogs you down and ultimately makes you irritable and moody. In these cases, the only person keeping you from being truly happy is yourself.

It takes practice.

Flipping this switch isn’t easy; like making any change, it takes concerted effort and continual practice. Here are some ways to let go of negativity and invite more positivity into your life:

1.Say it and mean it. When good things happen to people around you, congratulate them. Work to recognize their happiness and then share it! Tell them how happy you are for them and really mean it.

2. Don’t compare. Embrace your friend’s success and realize that you are two different people with different strengths and talents. Your manuscript may be a yard sale now, but give yourself two years and you may have a best-seller on your hands.

3. Think of how you would feel. Empathy is a powerful tool for understanding. Think of how you would feel after losing 50 pounds or landing that dream job. You’d feel amazing and want all your friends and family to be happy for you too.

4. Let it go. You can either bottle bad feelings inside or you can choose to let them go. A large part of our happiness is our choice. Understand that your thoughts directly affect your happiness and letting go of negative thoughts is like removing a heavy weight. If you need to take a deep breath or two…do.

Learning that my happiness for others symbiotically affected my own happiness was a huge wake up call—one I wish I’d had much earlier in life. The secret to happiness is more like a little key that can open more doors than you ever realized. When you can be sincerely happy for others I promise, it will change the way you feel about yourself. And if you’re lucky and catch on early, you just might buy yourself a few extra decades of inner peace.

A Brush with Sketchy Contacts: 3 Reasons To Visit Your Optometrist

*We’re partnering with the American Optometric Association to educate people on the importance of regular comprehensive eye exams and correct contact lens care. Because the eyes are the windows to the body and we want yours to be healthy!

Funny story—actually it’s kind of scary and very, very stupid. When I was just a young, impressionable, 20-something year old, my friend and I got a wild hair to go live in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for the summer. It was exhilarating and carefree and one of the greatest times of my life. However, we did a few crazy things while we were parentless on the other side of the country. My mom will be learning a few of them for the first time in this post (sorry mom!). During that summer of ’02 we patronized our very first Piggly Wiggly (cool), joined a Harley Davidson bike rally (very cool), and we thought it would be like, so awesome to buy  colored contact lenses from a street vendor (totally not cool). About a week later, my new blue contacts not only hurt my brown eyes, but they ended up giving me a serious eye infection. Gross! The moral of the story—never buy contacts from a sketchy third party.

Since that summer, I’ve grown thankfully more mature in my decisions. Now I always wear a helmet when I ride a high-powered motorcycle and I always, always consult a doctor of optometry for all my eye care needs.

Seeing an Optometrist for a Regular, Comprehensive Eye Exam and Contact Lens Prescription

If you wear contacts (over 40 million people in the United States do), then you’ve probably seen or heard of online contact lens companies that promise convenience and low prices. These retailers can sometimes be exactly what they appear: too good to be true. In fact, a reporter recently conducted an investigation on a direct-to-consumer contact lens brand and what she found is pretty alarming. “Contact lens startup…sold lenses with a fake prescription from a made-up doctor.” (Source: Quartz)

Fake prescriptions…made-up doctor…that’s scary stuff!

To avoid serious health risks, you should first, do your research and second, always visit an optometrist on a regular basis for the best and safest outcome. The American Optometric Association is working hard to educate people everywhere about safe use and care of contact lenses to help avoid serious risk and harm.

3 Reasons To Visit an Optometrist

1. They are a trusted source for a correct contact lens prescription.

Contact lenses are among the most popular forms of vision correction, but the truth is that they are medical devices and therefore require a valid prescription from an eye doctor. An optometrist (O.D.) is a primary eye health provider that is devoted to giving you the right eye care, the right prescription, and the right contact lens brand/fit for your needs. Online retailers may offer convenience, but convenience should not be put ahead of a patient’s health.

2. Your optometrist checks for way more than just your vision.

In addition to testing your vision and giving you an accurate contact lens fit and prescription, your optometrist will give you a comprehensive eye exam that looks for way more than you think. Did you know the eye acts as a window to your health? Through your eyes, an optometrist can detect signs of health issues including hypertension, or even some cancers without cutting into the body or taking a CT scan.

An optometrist can look for eye diseases (like glaucoma), systemic diseases (like diabetes), neurological issues (like brain tumors or MS), peripheral vision issues, colorblindness, and other eye and overall health issues. Now that’s pretty cool!

3. Not all third party vendors are reliable.

Unfortunately, like stated above, not all online retailers put patient health first. They might offer convenience, but beware of deceptions. Something scary all patients should know: some online retailers may replace your usual prescription contact lens with a different one, without even alerting you! Not cool. Having your contacts mailed to you might be convenient, but do your research. And make sure to schedule a visit with an optometrist and consult with them on the best options. Don’t have one yet? Use the AOA’s awesome doctor locator tool to find an optometrist in your area!

Doing the Right Thing

Some lessons you learn the hard way, like getting a terrible eye infection because of some sketchy contacts you bought from a vendor you didn’t know. That was a tough lesson to learn. According to the American Optometric Association’s 2017 Eye-Q Survey®, two in five Americans who have ordered contact lenses online have done so with an outdated/expired prescription and/or had their brand switched. That is no bueno.

If you’ve never visited an optometrist, find one now and schedule regular comprehensive eye exams. An in-person, comprehensive eye exam can tell you about your eye health, and even interesting things about your overall health beyond the eyes! And if it’s been awhile since you visited your optometrist, schedule an appointment today. The AOA recommends that patients wearing contact lenses should get an in-person, comprehensive eye exam annually.

Do the right thing for you, and for your family. Do your research whenever you purchase contact lenses and see your optometrist for a regular comprehensive eye exam—it offers a lot of peace of mind from a trusted eye doctor who cares.

Some tools to help you learn more!

Things To Do in Hot Springs, Arkansas—A Fun Road Trip

The more I travel, the more I realize how many incredible hidden gems are out there, often in our own back yards. I’ve partnered with the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism to tell you about one of those amazing gems right here in the United States. Hot Springs, Arkansas is an awesome place to visit and it’s just a road trip away if you live in the South like I do.

My little family (well okay, we’re a big family to most people’s standards) of seven packed our bags for the weekend, grabbed a bunch of snacks for the car, and set off on the three and a half hour car ride to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Our trip was amazing and I can’t believe we haven’t done it before. Here is a little bit more about Hot Springs, Arkansas and some of the top things to do there!

Things To Do in Hot Springs, Arkansas

Hot Springs, Arkansas is also home of Hot Springs National Park. They both get their name from an array of naturally heated springs that still supply water for thermal baths (more on that later, ‘cause it’s really cool!). Hot Springs National Park is the smallest and oldest National Park (dating back to 1832) and you can visit for free! I love finding free things to do on trips.

Until this weekend, I’d never visited Arkansas before. When we drove in, the sun was just setting, turning the sky a marvelous orange and purple that was absolutely beautiful. Arkansas is full of trees and lush greenery that I didn’t expect to find. There are beautiful winding rivers and breathtaking views and I was sincerely blown away. I don’t know why it took me so long to visit Arkansas, but I’m definitely going back.

Hot Springs is a really unique town you can visit in Arkansas and here were some of our favorite things to do there:

1. Spend a day at Oaklawn Racing & Gaming.

This trip was full of firsts and visiting a real horse racing track was an experience my kids and I will never forget. Located in Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas, Oaklawn Racing & Gaming is a BIG deal. They’ve been one of the nation’s most premier Thoroughbred racetracks since 1904. That’s over 113 years of history! You can watch the live video we shared from Oaklawn here.

I’ll admit I used to wonder what the big draw to horse racing was. I didn’t grow up attending horse races, so I didn’t understand what an awe-inspiring opportunity a day at the race tracks could be. It’s a total sensory experience. When you walk in, you smell the earthiness of the dirt and the stables along with the yummy smells of grilled burgers and French fries. When that iconic trumpet fanfare sounds across the stadium, it ignites the inner kid in you and when the horses take off with brightly-dressed jockeys crouched on their backs, you can’t help but cheer!

Speaking of kids…my five kiddos loved the Oaklawn Racing track! We had a special behind-the-scenes tour that allowed my kids to get up close and personal with the horses who star in the Oaklawn races and the jockeys that ride them for big winnings.

We met two amazing jockeys there who made sure that my kids felt special. David Cabrera is a famous 23-year-old jockey in Oaklawn with humble beginnings. He came to work there as a stable hand when he was 14 years old. Now he earns over $1 million a year in winnings. Another incredible jockey we met was Alex Birzer who really took my kids under his wing and let’s just say they were super impressed.

Oaklawn Racing & Gaming is great for a family outing or a date night with so much to eat, do, and see. We could have easily spent several hours there! And at only $4.50 per ticket for upgraded seating on the weekends and free general admission, it makes for inexpensive entertainment! Oaklawn is the #1 tourism attraction in all of Arkansas and a must-see while you’re there. It’s an experience like you’ve never had before!

2. The Mid-American Science Museum

I love attractions that not only entertain my children, but help them learn as well. When you’re in Hot Springs, Arkansas, make sure to visit the Mid-American Science Museum. It’s Arkansas’s largest hands-on science center and so much fun!

The museum itself is modern and spacious—very cutting-edge. My kids loved the Marvelous Motion Gallery where they could play with a sand pendulum, a vertical wave machine (that was really cool!), the Peanut Fountain, and the Loopy Lasso. It basically kept my kids actively enthralled for three hours. I loved that they could do so many hands-on activities without someone telling them, “Don’t touch that.” Museums like this are refreshing for both kids and parents alike. I highly recommend spending some time at the Mid-American Science Museum in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

3. Bathhouse Row

Now this was cool! Bathhouse Row is a row of eight beautiful historic buildings built between 1911 and 1923. Remember, Hot Springs is named for all of its naturally-occurring hot springs. Well the ladies and gentlemen of historic Arkansas would travel to Bathhouse Row to have a relaxing, rejuvenating full spa experience. How neat is that?

Today you can visit Bathhouse Row and walk among these unique buildings and even book a genuine five-step spa treatment at the Quapaw Bathhouse (a family-oriented spa) which includes a large spa pool. When we go back to Hot Springs, I’m going to go back and book a massage there.

One of my favorite things about Bathhouse Row was the quaint shops surrounding it. There were gift shops, a cupcake bakery, a candy shop, a wax museum, and even a fortune teller booth on the sidewalk. We gave the kids each $10 and they had a hey-day!

4. Take in a magic show at the Malco.

In the heart of charming downtown Hot Springs, Arkansas, lies the newly renovated Malco Theatre. The theatre is fun and will take you back to the first theatre you ever stepped inside. We saw master illusionist Maxwell Blade perform magic, comedy, and an entertaining act that my kids are still talking about. Seeing a show at the Malco is a great way to relax from a busy day sightseeing in Hot Springs.

5. The best food in Arkansas!

I’ll be the first to admit that one of my favorite parts about any vacation is the food, and I’m still dreaming about some of the food we had in Hot Springs. Here were our favorite restaurants. I’d love to hear your suggestions as well!

1. Deluca’s Pizza Napoletana. This low-key pizza place was just voted best pizza in Arkansas and it hands down deserves the prize. This pizza is perfectly dressed with fresh toppings and a crispy, chewy crust.

2. McClard’s Bar-B-Q. Some of the best BBQ in the South and I live in Memphis, so that’s saying something.

3. The Pancake Shop. You know when you pull up to a place and the line is already out the door that it must be amazing. That was exactly the case when we got to The Pancake Shop. This place is a local hot-spot and amazing for breakfast.

6. Other Arkansas must-sees that we’re coming back for.

One weekend just didn’t quite cut it for all the things we wanted to see in do while we were in Arkansas. Here are the must-sees that are on our to-do list for next time:

  • Crater of Diamonds State ParkYou can actually dig for diamonds in this one-of-a-kind state park. The kids were so disappointed we didn’t have time for this one. We’ll definitely make another trip in the spring to visit the Diamond Discovery Center and diamond search area.
  • Travel to Little Rock. Little Rock sits on the banks of the Arkansas River and is the largest city in Arkansas (population 200,000). Among the many fun things to do in Little Rock (shopping, dining, parks, etc.), I’ve heard great things about the Museum of Discovery, the METRO Streetcar, and the Big Dam Bridge Pedestrian and Bicycle Trail.

Overall, I was genuinely impressed with our road trip to Hot Springs, Arkansas. It was diverse in so many ways that I didn’t anticipate and we were thoroughly entertained the entire time. It’s so fun to explore places in the United States that have so much to offer. If you live near Hot Springs, Arkansas, I highly recommend taking a road trip there!

Thank you the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism for sponsoring this post. All opinions are my own.
