Our Favorite Halloween Picture Books

I love it when libraries and book stores put out Halloween picture books. So many parents and grandparents relish the Halloween season. The weather has changed and we’ve all come indoors from our summer pools (except for you southern hemisphere – you can laugh all the way to the beach right now!). Now we’re ready to decorate our houses with spider webs, cauldrons and candy. Plus the sun goes down earlier which means more time for snuggling up with our kiddo’s and reading! *celebrate*

In this article, I’ll be sharing some of my favorite Halloween books. There is a diverse range of Halloween books, so hopefully there’s something here for everyone. If the Halloween picture books you love aren’t included, I’d love to hear what they are in the comments below.

Best Halloween Book for Youngest Readers

Bob Shea’s tongue in cheek, The Scariest Book Ever, is not very scary, making it perfect for the littlest readers. Plus, this book hot off the press – so go grab a copy! This book features contemporary artistic spreads and fun Halloween images. The illustrations are one point. But, you don’t have to take my word for it; Shea was recently honored by the Society of Illustrators as a “Original Art 2017 Featured Artist” for this book.

Bonus! Shea created the funniest trailer for his book. Watch it with your kids on Facebook –> {here}.

Best Halloween Picture Book for the Gross Factor

Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich is a collection of tales of classic monsters told in a new, funny way, by the comedic writer, Adam Rex. This book appealed more to me as a parent and one of my kids who relishes the gruesome liked it a lot. My other [sensitive] child was a little horrified at the gory details. One thing I appreciate is that this is a longer picture book, and because it’s broken up by stories every page or every few pages, you can just do one tale or poem and save the rest for later. This is great for nights where you only want to read for three minutes or your child is particularly tired or fussy.

A little snippet from Frankenstein Eats a Sandwich:

“It’s time for bed,” all the royal servants said. Mummy played on the floor, and he wailed, “Five minutes more!” Here’s his new excuse: He wants cookies with his juice. But he won’t get far — that’s his stomach in that jar.

Most Endearing Spooky Story

The heartfelt tale, Leo, a Ghost Story, took the literary world by storm. Robinson is one of the most sought after illustrators today and you can see why with his use of white space and color palette. And the author, Barnett, brings his signature depth and well-timed page-turns that really makes this story tug at your heart strings. If you haven’t read it yet, now is the perfect time to get a copy and snuggle up with your kiddo (and a flashlight, you know, because that helps with the spooky factor).

My Favorite Halloween Story (because ballet!)

I stumbled across this delightful Vampire Ballerina series while doing research on the amazing illustrator LeUyen Pham. How perfect is this for girly-girls who want to have a little Halloween magic in their life? This picture book also has full fold-out pages, which levels-up the tactile factor of this book.

Best Halloween Picture Books for All Year

I couldn’t narrow this down, so I selected two books that will be fun to keep on your shelves all year round.

Like Creepy Carrots, Creepy Pair of Underwear is perfect for Halloween, without actually saying “Halloween”, so it’ll be extra fun to read all year. The author and illustrator for this book have so many awards, their mantle has probably crumpled under the weight. If you haven’t picked up this book, it’s definitely one to add to your “to be read” list.

Crankenstein is a classroom read-out-loud favorite. Ask your kids if they have this in their classroom library. If not — score for you! You’ll get to be the one to introduce it. Grab a copy from the library or the book store and prepare for major parent-points.
