How I Use Face Tapping To Ease Stress, Fight Wrinkles, and Sleep Better

How I Use Face Tapping to De-stress, fight wrinkles, and sleep better

How I Use Face Tapping To De-Stress, Fight Wrinkles, and Sleep Better

If asked to describe myself, I’d tell you in many ways I’m a pretty laid back person. I’m low-maintenance; I seek out positive vibes from life and try to share them back. But another big part of me internalizes tons of stress. I have always had high expectations for myself.

For example, in the third grade our school was having a field day and I was lined up for the 100-yard dash. I wanted so badly to win and when the whistle blew, I took off, well ahead of the pack. But in the last few yards, Jenny Farmer burst past me to win the blue ribbon. Emotions that were too big for me swelled up inside like a dark thundercloud and spilled over as I sobbed and sobbed. I was so disappointed that I’d let myself down.

Thirty-some years later, I’ve grown into those emotions a little better, like a girl whose feet finally fit into her mom’s high-heeled shoes.

But I still have incredibly high expectations of myself. If I’m working on a project, I want it to be the best project and I will think about it constantly, plan it in my mind start to finish, and stress over it until every muscle in my face is tense and I’ve got a killer headache brewing. When something is broken, I need to be able to fix it. If there’s a problem at work, I can’t rest until it’s resolved. When one of my kids are sick or going through some difficulty, I lie awake at night, thinking about it and losing sleep. My mind is always on and it’s hard to turn it off.

Like many of you, I over-think, over-analyze, and over-stress more than I should. Personally, I feel all of those negative emotions in my face, especially right between my eyes. So if you’ve got an over-active mind that manifests as tension in the head and face, I think I have something that will help. It’s called face tapping.

What is Face Tapping?

I first learned about face tapping during my first year teaching. With all of the planning and pressures of creating brand new curriculum for seven high school classes, I was feeling the stress. One day at lunch, a veteran teacher was talking about how she uses face tapping to ease tension. As she demonstrated tapping certain points on her face, I was intrigued. That night I went home and researched face tapping and tried it out. I’ve been using it ever since to help me de-stress, fight wrinkles, and sleep better.

Face tapping, or EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a method where you use your fingertips to tap on key energy points on your head, face, and collar bones. These key energy points are based on the traditional Chinese medicinal belief that the body’s has an energy, or “ch’i.” Face tapping is very similar to acupuncture, but can be done at home and without the use of needles.

Negative emotions, like anxiety, hurt, anger, worry, and stress all affect our overall wellness. A lot of us feel these emotions in our head and face. By tapping your face in a few strategic places, you can diffuse stress almost immediately.

Tapping Points

Face tapping involves seven main tapping points: 1) the top of the head, 2) the medial points of the eyebrows, 3) the lateral sides of the eyes, 4) under the eyes, 5) under the nose, 6) the chin, and 7) the medial points of the collar bone.

How I Use Face Tapping

When I’m feeling especially stressed or have a hard time getting to sleep at night because of an overactive mind, I use face tapping. I take the tip of my middle finger and start at the EFT energy point on the very top of my head. I tap on all the main face tapping points (see above diagram) and end at my collar bones tapping three times with the tip of my middle finger on each point.

It sounds crazy, but something about it completely works. For me, the physical act of tapping on tense facial muscles helps relax them. Tapping on each energy point helps calm my nerves and draw my attention away from external distractions, instead focusing on my body, my breathing.

Again, it’s crazy until you try it.

When I Use Face Tapping

1.To De-Stress: When I’m stressed out about work, responsibilities, or kids, I use face tapping . Even taking five minutes to find a quiet room and tap on all the energy points a few times helps.

2. To Fight Wrinkles: Aside from protecting your skin and using anti-aging products, you can actually use EFT tapping to combat wrinkles. I use it especially on my forehead where all of my “worry lines” seem to appear. Tapping relaxes tense muscles and invigorates them.

3. To Sleep Better: The moment that I lay down for bed is when my mind starts gearing up. Some nights I’ll lie there for an hour or two just thinking of all the things I need to do. When that happens, I use face tapping to chill myself out. It’s the funniest thing, but it calms me down and clears my mind for sleep.

Still skeptical about face tapping? I was too, until I tried it. Now, I’m a believer. If you’re a worrier, an over-thinker, or just want to invite a little calm into your life, give face tapping a try. It’s cheaper than acupuncture or therapy and a lot less scary too.

Grid-Tied PV Solar Systems

Grid-Tied Photovoltaic Solar Systems

With the continued increase in electric costs and improved solar panel technology, residential solar systems are becoming very popular. Grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) systems consist of solar panels, an inverter (sometimes more than one), power conditioning equipment, and a connection to the utility system (grid). By tying the solar system to the utility grid, excess electricity that’s produced can be “sold” back to the utility or credited to the producers account and used to offset times when the solar system isn’t producing sufficient power for the home. The home can still draw power from the utility grid during the night, or poor solar generating days due to weather or time of year.

Roof Mounted Vs Ground Mounted PV Solar Systems

One of the first decisions to be made with regard to installing a PV Solar System for your home is whether to use a roof mounted or ground mounted PV system. Roof mounted systems are mounted directly to the roof in a fixed position. Depending on the orientation of your roof the efficiency of the system will vary. South facing roofs are ideal and its important that they are not shaded by trees or other nearby buildings.

Ground mounted systems can be either fixed or tracking. Fixed systems are oriented for the ideal southern exposure and avoidance of shading from trees and buildings. Ground mounted tracking systems come in two different versions. Single-axis tracking and dual-axis tracking. Single-axis trackers follow the sun from east to west in a single line. Dual-axis trackers an follow the sun more precisely in a circular motion from the east to west improving efficiency even more.

Which one is best for you? Well that is a loaded question and best answered with the help of your solar contractor. However, here are some of the things to consider for each:

  • Roof Mounted PV Systems – Roof mounted PV systems are typically the least expensive to install because the roof becomes the supporting structure. While this type is often the cheapest, it comes with some compromises such as: roof penetrations, fixed orientation to the sun, extra roof loading on your home, and the need to remove the panels when new roofing is needed.
  • Ground Mounted Fixed PV Panel Systems – These are a great option when a roof isn’t large enough or doesn’t have a good southern exposure. These are cheaper than the tracking units but do require space in your yard. A nice benefit over the roof mounted systems is not having to remove them for a new roof.
  • Ground Mounted Single-Axis Tracking PV Panel Systems -These are typically used for non-residential large scale systems. Not likely to be an option for home owners.
  • Ground Mounted Dual-Axis Tracking PV Panel Systems -These are the most expensive yet most efficient systems. The increased efficiency will certainly pay for the extra construction costs over the life of the system. These systems are often smaller in size as well due to the increased efficiency. In some cases these can be as much as 40% more efficient compared to a fixed roof system. Tracking systems can require some additional maintenance to the tracking motors.

Grid-Tied Net Metering

I recently had a large ground mounted, dual-axis, tracking system installed at my home. The system is 14.4 kw in size due to our very high electric consumption. Our peak usage occurs in the summer time when we have central air running, a pool heater, and electric dryer. This is an ideal situation because the summer season is also the highest solar potential especially here in New England.

However, even though our high usage matches well with our high production, net metering allows us to store electric credits when we produce more than we use, and apply those credits to times when we’re using more than we’re producing. What’s really neat about a net metered system vs one that uses batteries to store the excess power, is we’re helping power neighbors homes. When excess power from our system goes back out to the street through the meter, it’s used by adjacent properties.

At the end of each month the power bill can vary depending no the time of the year and power use. In some months users might have a small net power charge for any supplemental electricity needed that wasn’t produced. Some months the bill may include credits for excess power that was generated. Those credits can be applied to future bills.

Above is a snap shot from our solar monitoring software that tracks our daily power generation. On this particular day we generated 66.3 kw-hours of power. We likely used about 90 kw-hours of power for the day so the net power needed from the grid was only about 24 kw-hours. This was on December 17th, which is almost the shortest day of the year, so as the days get longer, and the sun gets higher in the sky, the system will generate much more power.

Does Solar Power Make Sense For Your Home?

Lately lots of our customers have been asking about the financial feasibility of installing a solar power system at their home. In most situations a solar system does make financial sense in the long term. So if you’re planning on being in your home for quite some time, and you’ve got the room for a system whether on your roof or in your yard, the long term payoff in most cases makes good sense.

The system I just installed at home home was just over $50,000 to install. However, with an average power bill just north of $6,000 a year, and a 30% tax rebate on the installation, the payback is only around 6 to 7 years. The system will perform for well over 25 years and likely longer than that so the math made lots of sense for us.

If you’re interested in going solar, call several installers, meet with them, ask lots of questions and get several estimates. Do your home work, check references, and look at all the numbers to see if the payback meets your financial needs and goals. Good luck!

Safe Ways To Meet up with an Internet Stranger to Buy or Sell

A funny thing happened the other day that I can laugh about now, but it got me thinking…what if things had gone differently? Today we buy and sell so many things via Craigslist, Facebook, and other social networking markets that require some type of face-to-face meeting. It’s always good to refresh yourself on these safe ways to meet up with an internet stranger when buying or selling things.

Safe Ways To Meet up with an Internet Stranger To Buy or Sell

It was a few weeks before Christmas and the only things my five-year-old daughter wanted were two little LOL Surprise Dolls. Like every other ridiculously hot holiday item, these silly toys were sold out both online and in every local store. So I did what every responsible parent does…hop on Craigslist. Viola! There was a person in my city selling exactly what I needed and we arranged to meet in a bank parking lot for the transaction.

You’ve probably experienced these types of meetings before. Personally, my nerves are always a bit on edge not knowing quite who to expect, and my imagination goes into overdrive. That day, I pulled up next to a black SUV, whose windows were tinted so darkly I couldn’t see the person inside. I gulped, looked over both my shoulders, making sure there were at least a few witnesses milling about, and stepped out of my car. That driver side window rolled down and the man inside showed me the goods—two tightly wrapped LOL Dolls. I slipped him a twenty, and practically ran back to my car and drove away.

It can be weird meeting someone to buy or sell things; the stranger-danger ingrained in us as kids still knows how to cause a ruckus. When it comes to these types of transactions, make sure and use these safety tips.

1. Meet in a public place.

It seems like a no-brainer, but make sure you determine a public place for your transaction location. Some place like a grocery store parking lot, a coffee shop, or heck, even a police station parking lot (if you want to be extra safe!). Both parties will feel more comfortable in a place where other people are present, and even security cameras if need be.

2. If you have to meet in a home, bring a friend.

Sometimes meeting in public isn’t feasible. When it comes to buying or selling large furniture, the transaction has to happen at home. I’ve sold a couch, a crib, and a kitchen table this way.

In the instance where someone will have to come into your home to look at or buy an item, first make sure someone else is there with you. The more people the merrier. Before giving them your address, it’s a good idea to chat on the phone. You can learn a lot from a verbal conversation and let your instincts go to work. If possible, have the item ready by the front door.

In the case that you have to enter someone else’s home to make a purchase, take the same precautions. Make sure you bring a friend or family member along. Request that the item be ready for you at the door.

3. Always have a phone.

Whether meeting up to buy a stroller you found on Craigslist or meeting up to sell said stroller, always have your phone on you. Text a friend your plans and tell them you’ll text them as soon as the transaction is complete. Call your mom and have her on speaker phone if that makes you feel more comfortable.

Honestly, 100% of transactions I’ve had with people I met on Craigslist or Facebook have been positive. But it never hurts to be safe.

4. Set up your phone to track your location to friends and family.

You can put your smartphone’s location tracking to good use by sending a close friend or family member your location. Friends can also track your location using apps like Find My Friends. It’s super handy to have, and in cases where you’re meeting up with a stranger to buy or sell, it can offer peace of mind.

5. Bring only the agreed-upon cash.

The Craigslist “Personal Safety” page recommends using care when buying or selling high-valued items like computers, cell phones, or jewelry. Bring only the agreed-upon cash or even handle the transaction at a bank.

6. Do the transaction in daylight hours.

Always carry out your by-owner transactions in the daytime, never at night. Even if schedules have to be switched around or it’s inconvenient, make sure to meet during the day.

7. Don’t give out personal information.

Never, ever give a stranger personal information like your social security number, unnecessary addresses, or bank information. It’s nunya…nunya business. If they ask, that’s a big red flag that you might not want to do business with this person.

7. Listen to your instincts.

If something feels off, listen to your gut. Twenty bucks, fifty bucks, even a thousand bucks isn’t worth risking your safety. God gave you good instincts—trust them.

Again, I’ve done many, many online-to-person transactions and have never had a negative experience. In fact, I’ve met some really nice and interesting people buying and selling on Craigslist. Once I met a professional bull rider whose wife purchased the crib my baby recently outgrew for their first baby. It’s kind of cool how our lives can intertwine.

Online marketplaces are a great way to earn some money selling stuff you don’t need and they’re a good way to save money on used items that are exactly what you’re looking for, as long as you practice general safety precautions and use your common sense.
